Studies have shown that the intake of cow's milk can have negative effects on human well-being, resulting in allergies, arthritis, acne, and diabetes. As a result, debates have arisen about the potential benefits or drawbacks of consuming cow's milk.
Oski (p. 23) states that cow milk is thought to be a contributor to iron-deficiency anemia in children because of its low iron levels compared to mother's milk. Inadequate iron intake can result in a deficiency if infants do not receive enough iron. Although some individuals dismiss this fact and hold different beliefs, cow milk can have negative consequences. Dairy products like milk are highly desired and frequently consumed as part of everyday family diets in America.
Dairy companies argue against the idea that cow milk is harmful, stating it is a natural product. However, Oski provides reasons
...why cow milk is unhealthy for humans. One reason is lactose intolerance, where many people cannot digest lactose, the sugar in milk. Babies aged one to four often lack enough lactase in their small intestines. This means if they drink milk, it becomes toxic because it can't be digested properly and instead bacteria in the colon act on it.
Cow milk can cause gas, resulting in bloating, cramps, and potentially watery diarrhea (Oski p. 13). In addition, some individuals have an unfavorable response to cow milk and must eliminate it from their diet. Cow milk has also been linked to weakened bones that are more susceptible to fractures and breakages (Keon n.).
Keon asserts that countries with lower consumption of dairy products have a decreased risk of developing osteoporosis and experiencing bone fractures. This challenges the notion that milk is the
main source of calcium, as dairy product calcium is deemed detrimental to health. Additionally, excessive cow milk intake can cause weight gain due to its high cholesterol levels. Consequently, Keon argues that despite its affluence, America has the highest proportion of unhealthy individuals, primarily due to overweight concerns.
Consuming cow milk is not recommended due to its potential negative effects on the human body. The excessive nutrients found in whole cow milk, including high levels of unsaturated fats, can heighten the risk of heart diseases. To ensure a healthy lifestyle, it is advisable to refrain from drinking cow milk and explore alternative sources of calcium.
In addition, as cow milk is specifically tailored for cows' digestive systems, it may pose challenges in terms of digesting and absorbing nutrients for humans (Gilman p.).
Even though cow hormones and human hormones have similarities, it is crucial for individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles for a successful life. Evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of consuming cow milk is vital in forming personal beliefs. As a result, medical professionals have confirmed that cow milk is harmful to human health as it can cause illnesses in both adults and children.
