He secretly held the belief that getting to "the good place" was pointless and decided not to make any effort to reach it. Miss Watson confirmed Huck's suspicion that there was no possibility of Tom Sawyer ending up in Heaven when he inquired.

Huck expressed his happiness, stating that he desired to be with himself and someone else. In one evening, following Miss Watson's gathering for prayer with him and the slaves, Huck goes to sleep feeling extremely lonely and wishing for death. The sounds of nature outside his window gives him chills. Accidentally, Huck flicks a spider into a candle and becomes scared by the negative sign it represents. Shortly after midnight, Huck hears movement beneath the window along with a "me-yow" sound. He responds with another "me-yow." By climbing out of the window onto the shed, Huck discovers that Tom Sawyer is patiently waiting for him. Together, Huck and Tom cautiously make their way through the garden, with Huck stumbling on a root as they pass by the kitchen.

Inside, Jim, a large enslaved person, hears the sound. Tom and Huck crouch down, attempting to remain motionless. However, Huck experiences an irresistible itch, which always happens to him in situations such as being in the presence of "the quality" where scratching is inappropriate. Out loud, Jim declares that he will remain in place until he figures out the origin of the sound, but eventually he falls

asleep after several minutes. Tom decides to play a prank on Jim by placing his hat on a tree branch above Jim's head. Despite Huck's objections about the potential risk of being caught, Tom takes candles from the kitchen.

Later, Jim will recount that he was transported across the state by witches who displayed a hat above his head as a symbol. He embellishes the story further, gaining popularity among the slaves who revel in tales of witches. He wears a five-cent piece around his neck which Tom had left for the candles, considering it a charm bestowed by the devil with the ability to heal illnesses. Jim's ego becomes inflated due to his newfound fame, making him unsuitable for his role as a servant. Meanwhile, Tom and Huck encounter a group of boys and together they embark on a boat journey to a sizable cavern. It is there that Tom proclaims the formation of his new gang titled "Tom Sawyer's Gang." Every member must pledge in blood an oath promising, among other things, to murder the family of any member who reveals the gang's secrets.

According to the boys, it is a "truly stunning oath." Tom confesses that he borrowed some of it from books.
