How High Schools are Not Preparing Students for College Essay Example
The issue of punishments and lack of proper strictness when it comes to suspensions and extra hour detentions is something that students have taken up lightly. When it comes to having detention, nowadays students do not feel the urge of being punished and aside from their routine being disrupted most have adapted it as a way of life. The issue of giving students detention is so that they may feel sorry for what they have done. Some of these students do not in any way acknowledge their wrong doing and just go ahead with their day when detention is over. The reason I raise concern over this issue is because, teachers are facing stubborn students who have refused to reform. These are students who go about their normal daily activities without a care of who or what they offend. We need to
...come up with a way that these children can be held accountable for what they do and get to learn a lesson of their behavior.
This issue is being addressed to the teachers who effortlessly try to cope and understand their students and accept them with their flaws but fail to integrate a powerful system to help the indiscipline students. The evidence that the indiscipline in high schools is heightened is the issue of students not attending classes, missing in co- curriculum activities, students engaging in quarrels with each other, and overall rudeness. The teachers are affected by this kind of student behavior in that, their efforts in class are taken for granted, students do not perform well and the teachers are seen as the bigger failures. Another issue is that, when these students
get into the working world where there is no one monitoring them they tend to be a nuisance to the society.
The other issue that indirectly affects the teachers is that, they fail to notice their efforts when these students just go into the world and they do not find what they were targeting. There is a lot that also gets in the way of most people who are defined by their tutors and what they acquired from school. In most cases, students have a weak way of showing what they learnt, if it so happens that they never took their high school studies seriously. High school is stated as the period when one knows exactly what they want to do in life (Singh et. al, 2016). It is where one is molded and made into the individual that people desire to see in the community. If the high school learning process is altered, then the whole system is disrupted too.
The solution I would propose for such kind of issues that face the teachers and the community at large would be punishments to be more severe and involve activities such as helping out in the library, helping the janitor and writing essays and articles. These kinds of punishments would make students more responsible since it is tedious work and will need thinking and reasoning. Another thing is that, students who finish high school with a high record of detention periods can be denied access to a college until they assure the public that they are of good conduct.
In conclusion, I know some people would state that enhancing punishments is something bad but I say that, it
is better for students to learn the hard way than allow the world to face their hard ways. The issue of enhancing proper punishment will mold upright individuals. Even though the method will be through inflicting fear of failure and suffering after high school, it will be the best thing to do. Students need to be well prepared for college instead of going to make life harder for others and themselves.
