Antigone, written by Sophocles, is the focus of our attention among his three famous plays.
The play Antigone takes place in Thebes. It begins with one of Odebus' sons killing his brother, resulting in King Creon prohibiting the burial. In opposition to the King's decree, Antigone decides to bury her sibling. This essay examines the social standing of women during this era.
During the time of this play, women in Greece had limited rights compared to men. They were primarily confined to their homes and expected to obediently fulfill their husbands' wishes while nurturing their children as societal expectations dictated. Greek women faced strict rules that they were supposed to follow without question, resulting in a predominantly male-controlled society.
In spite of this, Sophocles portrays women as strong and courageous individuals rather than weak and ignorant. He also explores
...ancient Greek myths and culture as a whole, incorporating themes that emphasize the role of women during that period. These ideas are evident in the play, which outright opposes traditional beliefs about women.
Antigone has consistently defied these rules, acting according to her beliefs even when she acknowledges their wrongdoing. This is evident in her defiance of Creon's rules and her choice to bury her brother. In contrast, her sister Ismene has always been obedient to the laws, as demonstrated by her statement: "the law is strong we must give in to the law." Antigone's actions consistently contradict those of Ismene.
For example, Antigone's desire to bury her brother is met with Ismene's cautionary words: "Think what Creon will do". Ismene consistently hinders Antigone's actions because she follows the societal rule of women obeying men. Ismene adheres to the prevailing norms
of that time and does not attempt to challenge them. As an illustration, Ismene reminds Antigone: "We are only women, we cannot fight with men". Some individuals view Antigone as a formidable woman who will pursue her desires regardless of the consequences, even if it proves to be a mistake, placing her as an exception among the women of that era. Antigone acknowledges her fate, stating: "I knew I must die, even without your decree: I am only mortal. And if I must die now, before it is my time to die".
Her breach of laws and courage ultimately led to her downfall in the play's conclusion. In today's world, different societies have their own unique set of laws and values, resulting in significant variations in the roles women play. Personally, I believe there is no disparity in abilities between men and women. Only individuals with closed minds accept the notion of a gap existing between them.
