"I will be seeing you before dinner, mum. Goodbye and I love you."

On a gloomy Friday evening, I departed from my residence and rendezvoused with my closest companion Stacey. As we drew closer to the notorious "Haunted House on the Hill" in Salem, apprehensions started to arise. Although I had previously boasted that there was no reason to be frightened, now as we surveyed its antiquated furniture and polished floors, it seemed unlikely that my words would hold true. Stacey, who is normally vivacious with her short, smooth brown hair and glistening brown eyes, now stared back at me with lifeless dread. In spite of our original intention to explore the haunted house and demonstrate to our school peers that it was not genuinely haunted, even we began to hesitate.

our reason for coming to this place, she reminded me of our exploration plans. However, a loud thud interrupted her, causing both of us to jump. Silence prevailed as Stacey stammered about hearing something. To calm her down, I casually shrugged off the noise as a figment of our imagination. Nonetheless, with nightfall approaching, the situation was becoming increasingly eerie.

"I'm searching my backpack for the candles I packed in case of emergency," I ask, frustrated by the lack of light. Stacey expresses her unease, asking if we should leave. I try to comfort her by placing my arm around her and requesting a lighter. Despite her doubts, I reassure Stacey that we will be safe once we finish searching the house, holding up the candle to my face for light."

candle and strode off into the dark hallways, I commented on her behavior before lighting another candle and leaving the living room to explore the seemingly endless passages. Despite sensing that something was amiss about both the house and our presence there, I tried to brush off those feelings until loud footsteps and a heavy thud made me stop in my tracks causing my neck hairs to stand up. Looking around into the vast space, I called out but quickly scolded myself for letting my imagination run wild when no one answered.

Feeling emboldened by the sight of a glimmer of light, I bravely explored a room by myself after Stacey went another way. At the end of the hallway, I encountered two enormous wooden doors labeled "Library." Curious, I pushed them open and was astounded by what lay before me.

While I was appreciating the vast assortment of books, I involuntarily whispered in amazement. However, my pleasure was abruptly interrupted when I realized that there was another person in the house and it scared me. When I slowly turned around, I noticed Stacey and expressed my annoyance by saying "You frightened me! Don't do that again!" After apologizing for her actions, she clarified that she assumed I had heard her enter.

As I walked across the room, I asked if anything had been discovered on the upper floor. The response was uncertain, with a reply of "Hmm...I'm not sure."

Despite the chills on my skin, I was engrossed in a book called 'Feeling Corpse'. The woman calmly responded that she wasn't discussing anything interesting, but her voice trailed off.

"What do you think about increasing our visits to this

cool place after finding 'The Vampire stalks again' book?" I asked Stacey, proposing the idea.

Stacey...

"While perusing my newly found book, I caught myself engaging in self-dialogue. During this moment of reflection, I pondered the recent strain in my relationship with Stacey. Despite our previously tight bond, it seemed as though she was pushing me out of her life."

After hearing a loud noise, I was startled and reacted by dropping the book. My body became frozen and I was unable to flee or even scream due to my dry throat. Although I eventually managed to take a few steps forward, my fear intensified as I heard footsteps approaching from behind.

Although I tried to sprint, I was not transported at a faster pace. The pursuer's footsteps grew louder and closer, prompting me to run quickly. I left my candle behind and became covered in sweat as multiple thoughts flooded my mind without any chance of addressing them.

As I hastily traversed the corridors and ascended the steps, my footsteps caused the floorboards to emit loud squeaks. After some time, I chanced upon a door but encountered difficulty trying to unlatch it. In my state of agitation, I had unintentionally damaged the handle. Despite hearing a sudden outcry, I shortly determined that the chase had ceased. Confused and upset, I discarded the broken handle and retrieved a flickering candle without considering its origin. Next to the candle, I detected a shining object.

Gasping for air and trying to calm down, I reached out to grab the object. While I rested against the wall, uncertainty gnawed at me regarding Stacey's location. With caution in mind, I picked up the keys and

a broken piece of furniture nearby, tip-toeing stealthily across the floor. Unfortunately, the creaking planks gave away my movements as footfalls echoed once again - it seemed like my attacker knew what I was going to do. To my horror, their presence was closer than expected; their breath on my neck felt too real to ignore.

As I became aware of the necessity to flee and locate Stacey, I sensed the proximity of his breath. Upon seeing a door on my left side, I hurried towards it despite perceiving that the footsteps were becoming fainter. Despite encountering difficulty with the handle, I persisted in attempting to unlock it using the key. With my heart beating rapidly and the footsteps drawing nearer, I succeeded in gaining entry into the room.

Upon entering the room, I hurriedly gasped for air and believed that I had found a safe haven. While lowering the candle to the ground, an intense pain suddenly pierced my head and enveloped us in darkness. Upon awakening, joy overwhelmed me at the sight of Stacey. "Thank goodness you discovered me," I exclaimed with relief. "I was being trailed and assaulted. Please assist me in standing so that we can depart." However, rather than offering sympathy, Stacey's voice became frigid and chilly as she interjected without any hint of empathy: "We are not departing."

Feeling confused and with a throbbing head, I asked Stacey if she saw who hit me. Weakly holding my hand over the wound, I sat against the wall while waiting for her answer. Stacey had crossed over to the window and was staring out, leaving me without the energy to continue speaking.

"Why are you

doing this to me, Stacey?" I asked, realizing the truth of the situation. As she turned towards me, fixing me with her icy eyes, I cowered against the wall and clenched the broken table leg I was carrying, tightening my grip."

"I came here with evil intentions, but upon arrival, I regretted it and asked you to leave. However, you were unpleasant, so I felt compelled to scare you. You are my best friend of 6 years, but I believe you have always been spoiled," Stacey explained.

Stacey continued, expressing her feelings of never receiving anything and lacking popularity at school, while noting that Lizzie always had what she wanted and was seemingly beautiful. Stacey also mentioned that her parents had passed away.

When presented with an urgent situation, I utilized the opportunity to reflect on my choices. To extend the conversation, I asked, "Why didn't you reveal this data earlier?" Seizing control of the circumstance, I readied myself for retaliation: "It is now my turn to inflict upon you the same suffering that you caused me. Liz, get ready for your inevitable downfall. The moment has arrived for you to feel the identical emotions of solitude and exclusion that I have had to withstand."

As soon as she spoke, I could tell that her feelings towards me were filled with intense hatred. Knowing my only option for calming her down was to perish, I had to act quickly. In a split second decision, I determined that escaping through the window would be my best course of action. At that moment, she revealed a shining blade and presented it in the moonlight while keeping her back turned from me.

She declared, "This is what I will use."

With this being my one opportunity, I arose peacefully. Cautiously, I crept up behind her. When she approached, I directed her towards the window. A brief scuffle ensued, but I emerged victorious and propelled her out the window. Before long, I could detect muffled sobs as her form plummeted to the earth below. Alone at the apex, I comprehended that she had suffered neglect as a child and now her spirit would be at ease. Tears streamed down my face as I realized how excluded my close companion had felt.

The agony of accepting the truth that I could never trust anyone again and coping with the loss of a beloved friend has just begun.
