Head-up displays, also referred to as HUDs, are rapidly being integrated into modern vehicles. These devices present turn-by-turn directions and other vehicle information directly onto a windshield or reflector screen.
HUDs, or Heads-Up Displays, utilize GPS technology provided by either a car's system or a driver's smartphone. These displays showcase various information including directions, blind-spot detection, pedestrian recognition, and collision warnings. The main objective of HUDs is to convey crucial data without requiring the driver to look away from the road. According to BMW, their HUD system enables drivers to process information 50% quicker compared to a multimedia screen mounted on the dashboard.
According to IHS Automotive, despite General Motors introducing HUDs in the late 1980s, they were only found in 2% of new car sales last year. However, IHS forecasts that by 2020, this number will rise
...to 9%, equivalent to over 9 million vehicles worldwide. Luxury brands currently lead the way in adopting HUD technology, but it is also gaining popularity among mid-range models and after-market options.
Garmin has recently released a portable HUD model that connects to a smartphone wirelessly to show turn-by-turn directions on a small, see-through film on the windshield or reflector connected to the device. In addition to standard navigation features, this unit indicates turning lanes at intersections, alerts if the vehicle surpasses the speed limit, and identifies the location of traffic cameras.
The technology of augmented reality is already being implemented in cars, according to carmakers and futurists. A report by TechNavio, a technology research firm, released earlier this year, predicted that HUDs would become more popular as they are introduced into mid-range models. system prices. Mazda seems to have acknowledged this trend, as they announced in June that their new 2014 Mazda 3, a compact vehicle, will offer an optional HUD unit.
HUD technology holds a potential beyond its current features of navigation and collision warning, known as augmented reality. By utilizing sensors and cameras, HUD systems can identify real-world landmarks and locations, presenting relevant information on the windshield.
Mercedes and Pioneer both have their own advanced technologies in car systems. Mercedes developed the Dynamic and Intuitive Control System (DICE) that combines gesture-command controls with projected dynamic information. On the other hand, Pioneer manufactures an augmented-lite system that uses cameras to identify roadside objects and project relevant information onto an in-car screen using lasers.
IHS has stated that car manufacturers may eventually transform the whole windshield into an augmented reality display. The safety ramifications, however, remain uncertain. Nevertheless, if heads-up displays (HUDs) truly counteract the mounting evidence of the dangers of digital multitasking while driving, it would significantly facilitate their adoption.
