The Territorial Army, created in 1920 by the British under the Indian Territorial Act of 1920, had two wings: 'The Auxiliary Force' for Europeans & Anglo-Indians and 'The Indian Territorial Force' for Indian Volunteers. After India gained independence, the Territorial Army Act was enacted in 1948, and on October 9th, 1949, it was officially inaugurated by Shri C Rajagopalachari, the first Indian Governor General.

The date is celebrated annually as Prime Minister's TA Day Parade. Originally, the Territorial Army had different types of units such as Armed Regt (TA), Infantry Battalion (TA), Air Defence (TA), Med Regt (TA), Engineers Field Park Coy (TA), Signal Regiment (TA), EME Workshop (TA), Coast Battery (TA), ASC GT Coy (TA), ASC Compo Pl(TA) and AMC Field Ambulance(TA). During times of industrial unrest and natural disasters, departmental units have provided assistance to civil authorities. Notable examples include the earthquake in Latoor (Maharashtra), Uttarkashi in Garhwal Himalaya, and the Super Cyclone in Orissa. The ecological units have combated man-made environmental degradation by planting 2.5 crore trees across 20,000 hectares of land in Mussoori Hills ; Pithoragarh (UP), Bikaner ; Jaisalmer (Rajasthan), and the ravines of Chambal in Madhya Pradesh. The men of TA have actively participated in various adventure activities, with scaling Mt Tengchen being particularly famous.

Khang (6010 Mtr) in West Sikkim was conquered by the Jt-Indo-British TA Mountaineering Expedition in May 98. The Territorial Army officer and men have received decorations for their courageous acts and exceptional services. Up until now, they have received 02 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), 15 VSM, 05 Vir Chakra, 13 Sena Medal, 25 Mentioned-in-Despatches, and 43 COAS commendation cards. Numerous industrialists, politicians, and esteemed individuals have been part of the TA. Additionally, the force has the privilege of appointing 11 officers as Hony ADC to the President of India.
