This chapter looked into the importance of incorporating knowledge of the different lifespan stages that an individual undergoes as part of his or her development in providing effective multicultural counseling. In this chapter, Baruth and Manning (2003) have stated that although many counseling professionals who have been involved with multicultural counseling have become aware on the importance on understanding the different cultures of different individuals in the United States.

However, they have failed to take into consideration the various lifespan stages an individual goes through. This information is particularly pertinent in the understanding of the needs and concerns of the individual seeking counsel. I agree with the authors in stressing the importance of incorporating the knowledge of the lifespan stage of the individual as part of the knowledge that would be used

In fact, this is particularly pertinent information that counselors should take into consideration when conducting session with their patients regardless on whether the patient is from a different cultural background from the counselor or not. This is because the needs, wants and concerns of a particular patient from one particular lifespan stage will be different from an individual in a different lifespan stage even if the issue may be the same. One example of this instance is in regards to the death of a child.

The parents of the deceased child would see this as such a traumatic event that it had hampered their everyday normal activity.
