During the 1930s, millions of dollars were wiped out in an event that became known as the Wall Street Crash. It led to the Depression in America which crippled the country from 1930 - 1936. People lost their life savings when firms and banks went bust, and 12 - 15 million men and women - one third of America's population - were unemployed.

In the novella Of Mice and Man, by John Steinback, the main of quite George and Lennie are very good friends. In fact they have been friends for a long time. George always takes care of Lennie and tries to protect him, while Lennie obeys him and looks up to him. "Me an Lennie gonna' roll up a stake" This shows that it is George shows it is his intention to spend the rest of his life with his pal Lennie.

...

“Because I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you…”For Lennie, George is clearly the most important person in his life. He is his friend, his guardian and his only family. Whenever he does anything wrong, he would always think it as making George angry. He is very afraid of George’s disapproval. He has absolute faith in George, Lennie believes that George will always be there for him, and always give him the best possible.

Furthermore, when he killed Curley’s wife, he said, “I shouldn’t of did that. George’ll be mad.” This shows that everything for him is “George related”. It’s never about whether something is right or wrong; it’s about weather or not George approves of something, he woul

probably do it.

George, although he is devoted to Lennie, sometimes thinks of Lennie as a major source of trouble. Throughout the story, He has become angry because of the trouble that Lennie has unintentionally caused. For example, when he saw a women with soft smooth red dress in Weed, and he couldn’t help himself and touched the dress. The woman thought this was inappropriate and cried for help. Soon a lot of men with knives were chasing George and Lennie. . George always talks about how life would be much better if he is without Lennie. “God a’mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an’ work, an’ no trouble. No mess at all.” However, despite saying that, it is clear that George is in fact very devoted to his dear friend. For example, he has fled from place to place because of Lennie’s wrong doing. He certainly had his chance to just leave Lennie behind and left himself, but his choice was always to protect Lennie from any harm.

One of the big reasons that George and Lennie can be so close is that they share the same dream. They want a better life on a farm where they can where they can “live off the fatta the lan’. George has envisioned this dream by telling this story of the future many times, while Lennie unquestioningly believes in this dream. At the end of the story when Lennie died, George has lost his hope on this dream. This clearly shows that George himself has always envisioned this dream relies very much on Lennie.

style="text-align: justify">As mentioned above, George loves Lennie as his family, and therefore it is out of love for him that George chooses to end Lennie’s life himself. He never wants to see Lennie suffer from any pain, and since he knows that everybody wants to kill Lennie because of his mental problem, he would rather take Lennie’s life himself than to let him die under other people’s hands. And he did it as kindly as he could.

Lennie begged, “Let’s do it now, Let’s get that place now.” “Sure, right now. I gotta. We gotta”

George is trying to draw Lennie’s attention by driving him to think about their dream. This can help divert his attention and makes it easier to shoot him without him knowing. George’s “sure right now” indicates that he is actually going to shoot him “now”. While the last sentence “I gotta, we gotta”, shows that George thinks that he must shoot Lennie, once and for all, for himself and for Lennie.

Even thought Lennie and George are in different world but they became good friends. This gives hope to people because they give a example of friendships and love.
