Corregidor Island is one of those places that I’ve been dreaming of to visit for the longest time. I’ve watched different travel documentaries, seen creative photos from several travel bloggers about how beautiful the Corregidor Island was. However, I would not categorize myself as a history buff but funny, how I was always amazed by factual remains of historical places and ruins that witnessed how rich and at the same time how beautiful Philippine history is.
Corregidor Island also known as “The Rock” is a small rocky island in the Philippines which is part of the municipality of Cavite and not Bataan. Quite interestingly about it, was, the island is shaped like a tadpole. This island fortress stands as a memorial for the courage, valor and heroism of its Filipino and American defenders during World War II.

Luisa Doon, Tourism Society adviser, and gladly for P1, 700.00 it shouldered all expenses including our bus transportation from WCC to Pasay, the Ferry ride to Corregidor, a guided tour via Tranvia and lunch pack for our day tour in Corregidor.
Our trip was scheduled last January 24, 2013. We need to be at Sun Cruises Terminal by 7am on the day of our trip as the cruise will aboard at exactly 8am.
Below is the set day tour itinerary of Sun Cruise.

As soon as we arrived Corregidor Island, our scheduled Tranvias waiting for us. Tranvia is the main mode of transportation used during World War II in the island and still the mode of transportation used now.
Our tour guide was so genius as he delivered all trivia and all knowledge behind Corregidor Island. I remember when our tour guide told us about a trivia behind tranvia. “Did you know that only the highest ranking American officers may sit on the first row, followed by their subordinates on the second row and third rows? The fourth row is reserved for Filipinos.” As soon as my co-students heard that trivia they were happily murmuring each other as if they were really a high-ranked American officials! While the students on the fourth row and I’m luckily belong on that row were so proud of ourselves as if that we were the Filipinos who sacrificed our lives during World war II. Yeah!
We were luckily guided by our genius tour facilitator and at the same time he shared some exciting, hidden and creepy stories that can make your patriotic bloodline alive! And to think that we were luckily borne in this peacetime.
Probably my favorite places were Malinta Tunnel and Spanish Light House. I saw
Malinta Tunnel several times on television and I really loved the creepy ambience there. It seems that it was a challenge for me to go there. My creepy soul became more eager and excited when I got the opportunity to go there. Malinta Tunnel was used as storage of bombs and office of higher officials like late Pres. Manuel Quezon and later became hospital and also served as the secret passageway that Gen. McArthur used to escape Corregidor where I think was also place where he uttered his 3 famous words ”I shall return”.
Another place that I really loved was the Spanish Light House. We were given a chance to climb at the top of the lighthouse and we took 50 steps up and a very steep stairs above which is nearly 90 degrees angle that need to be trekked first. Since we were really eager and excited to see the overlooking view at the top, we took the opportunity and viola! It feels like heaven when we saw the beautiful scenery of Corregidor Island.
Over-all, it was a tour that full of knowledge, fun and wisdom! Amazingly, how Corregidor Island became a moving story island where everything around tells stories behind those ruins and how wrath of war destroyed many innocent lives. We should take Gen. McArthur message in our mind, “It is my earnest hope and indeed the hope of all mankind that a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past – a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfilment of his most cherished
wish for freedom, tolerance and justice.” Finally, I can say that our tour in Corregidor Island was truly a travel back into time.
