I chose to deal with the American giant of soft beverage Coca-Cola. In its Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability plan, the company.
This Sustainability report a quite interesting review based on stakeholders feedbacks, which will increase the brand transparency across its sustainability platform. As a matter of fact the company is trying to focus on four main elements: water stewardship, energy efficiency and climate protection, sustainable packaging and healthy communities. The report also includes “Plan Bottle” technology, aimed at improving water use and increasing production level.
Primary activities
Inbound Logistics
Coca-Cola mentioned in its report that regarding the inbound logistics that it is going to reduce the fuel used for manufacturing its own fleets of trucks, van, cars and also the e
...lectricity used in all sites due to the machines. The future plan of Coca-Cola focuses on zero waste and low carbon emissions. It is going to be step by step but given that the giant produces a lot, even if it slow down its emissions by 1%, the result can be seen.
Operations
The company is going to limit its emissions of Fuel during the transport, and also its CO2 emissions. It is the first soft drink company to receive the carbon standard. In its report, Coca-Cola focuses also on partnership, member of the FTSE4Good Index, also in partnership with the university of Cambridge Sustainability Leadership Program. Signatory of the UN global compact.
Outbound Logistics
In terms of outbound logistics, the company is going to reduce the electricity used by its cooler and vending machines at its customers premises, business travel rail, air and the
fuel used by its third-party distributors. Moreover, regarding the distribution, the firm is going to use alternative technologies and alternative fuels.
Marketing and sales
In terms of marketing and sales the company focuses more on the communication and the transparency throughout this report. As a matter of fact it insists on the fact that the design and packaging of the product will turn into a 100% recyclable bottle. It is also a strategy. The labeling will also be revisited (more clear and informative about the nutritional aspects of the beverage) The company will also be ensured that its products are sold and marketed in a responsible way. In terms of “Product portfolio strategy” the firm is going to privilege the quality of the product transparency to the quantity.
Service
With its eco plan for the London Olympics games, Coca-Cola to recycle the packaging from every Coca-Cola product consumes during the games, this plan shows up the eco friendly responsibility of the company and is a very important aspect for the brand image. Moreover, river cleanup projects are also a message send by the firm and a service to the environment. Action weeks made by CRS are also a way to make the customer/companies aware of the wastes caused by the mass production impact and the fact that each company have to be responsible and act against it.
Support Activities
Firm infrastructure:
In terms of infrastructure, the Coca-Cola Company does not plan any shift except from the fact that it focuses on having the best locals. A project of strength of the infrastructure to improve its environmental performance is
mentioned in the report; this will have costs for the company but for its image, being sustainable pass by all the steps. Zero carbon-manufacturing sites are planned. However, a few sustainable installations such as solar photovoltaic, wind turbines and districts heating in order to focus on the energy-efficiency improvements.
Human Resource Management:
Coca-Cola workplace strategy is focused on sharing cultures and knowledge (it obtains the “Label diversité”) developing a wellbeing program to encourage the employees to live positively. Training the managers to take full account of diversity and inclusion is also one of the company goals. Coca-Cola’s workplace profile is also passed on employee wellbeing. The company is investing a lot to train its employees to sustainable reflexes.
Technology development
The Coca-Cola Company develops clearly in its report that it will support technology development for production processes. As a matter of fact, the giant is mass-producing for clients all over the world and focuses on reduction of CO2 emissions, it also mentioned in its report that it is going to improve its packaging an order to have a 100% recyclable one.
These resolutions mentioned in the report will definitely have an important cost for the company. As a matter of facts as Ms Janice Piacente mentioned in the report, risks that could affect the business and financial results are disclosed in the form 10-K in the company annual report which is very important. CRS is also one of the 49 risks (availability of raw materials, procurement and supplier management, reputation and business interruption) But with the actual sustainability awareness, it is very important for the giant to be as eco
friendly as possible in order to keep a good brand image and also because it is known as the first soft beverage company and it has to show the right direction to the other, Coca-Cola is seen as a model for some companies and it has to keep its leader role.
This report did not offer me sufficient insight into the company’s sustainability performance in so far as it did not mentioned the weight of energy wasting, sometimes the company is not transparent enough on its wastes and this is very important when it comes to a sustainability report. Moreover, the importance of water wasting was not mentioned as a primary issue to solve/improve, however, as a primary need, water need to be considered as an important resource to save. Knowing the amount of Coca-Cola’s annual production, this point has to be solving as soon as possible.
