End of Life Care is usually the support that is given to terminally ill patients during their final stages. Apart from patients, this program is also offered to the elderly (Span, 2015). Through this program, the old, as well as terminally ill patients, are able to determine the manner in which they wish to spend their final days. Patients under the end of life care have the right to state where they wish to receive care in addition to where they would like to die. According to studies, it is advisable for one to have an advanced directive earlier in life since it will make it easy for medical practitioners to implement it, especially in situations where the patient becomes incapacitated (Span, 2015). Apart from providing a detailed analysis of the End of Life Care and its importance, the study also states why the program is yet

to take off fully in the United States.

Although people approaching their end of life are entitled to high-quality care, this care is only tailored for those who need it. This is because whereas some patients wish to be continually under medication, others claim that they don’t want any form of treatment but only comfort care (Span, 2015). The presence of an advanced directive from the patient usually enables medical practitioners to oblige with the patient’s request. Occasionally, patients nearing the end of life become incapacitated to the extent that they cannot make independent judgments. Through an advanced directive, one can appoint a surrogate decision maker who makes decisions on behalf of the patient when he becomes incapacitated (Radcliffe, 2015).

patients to be granted the ability to end their lives through assisted suicide. This is because some terminal illnesses are very painful; hence, they tend to add more suffering to the patient. In Oregon, through the Death with Dignity Act, patients suffering from terminal illnesses can opt to end their lives by prescribing for lethal medication (Becker, 2015). Research shows that although the United States is fully equipped to offer End of Life Care, the program is yet to fully take off since the nation is a death-denying society (Radcliffe, 2015). According to Becker (2015), most people are against the idea of assisted suicide since they believe patients will opt to end their lives in a move to avoid being a burden to the family.

End of Life Care is the support that is usually given to patients that are in their final stages of dying. Apart from patients that are terminally ill, this program is also offered to the elderly. Patients nearing their end of life need quality care. However, this care is only administered with regards to the wish of the patient. Therefore, for proper end of life care, patients are advised to draft an advanced directive, hence, making it possible for another person to make decisions for them in case they become incapacitated. Although I am in support of the end of life care, the program is yet to fully take off since most Americans shun from publicly talking about death. With this information, it is hard for patients to have a proper end of life care since they are always under medication.
