Formative/progress test: administered during a course. Summative/achievement test: administered at the end of a course Diagnostic test: administered at the beginning of a course and more finely tuned than a placement test. Proficiency test: focuses on what a learner is capable of, regardless of what level they are. Entry/placement test: administered to find out what a learner's level is.
