Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 9, 1927, Daniel Keyes started working as a ship's purser for the Marine Service at just seventeen years old.
Daniel Keyes began his professional journey as an associate editor in fiction, but eventually left the role to pursue fashion photography (H. Keyes, Daniel Keyes Bio). It is likely that his experience as a fiction editor provided him with the necessary abilities to become a successful novelist. In addition to his teaching job, Keyes led a hectic lifestyle, which included taking literature classes at Brooklyn College and writing on weekends.
After achieving his college degree at thirty-three years old, Daniel Keyes published his first recognized fiction novel, "Flowers for Algernon," in 1959 while working as a teacher. His experience with educationally slow students may have influenced his ideas
...for the unique novel, which was entirely written from the protagonist's perspective and had an innovative style. Keyes received acknowledgment and a Hugo Award for best short fiction in 1960. However, recognition didn't deter Keyes from his desire to learn, which mirrored the protagonist Charlie from his novel. Daniel Keyes was awarded the Nebula Award for the best science-fiction novel in 1967 for a book that was made into a movie named "Charlie" in 1968. Keyes' preferred writing about human psychology and authored two additional novels, The Touch in 1968 and Fifth Sally in 1980. The latter is inspired by a real person who had multiple personalities and focuses on psychological stress. Although these stories didn't receive a
much recognition as his first novel, Fratz, by Daniel Keyes.
One of the best depictions of human nature is found in Daniel Keyes’ “Flowers for Algernon”, according to Douglas Fratz in his work “Identities and Issues in Literature” (1997).
