we have the responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of each resident; each employee has a legal and ethical responsibility to report any actual or suspected incident of physical or financial abuse; this can include abuse of a caregiver to a resident, resident to resident, family member, visitor, volunteer or other person; any report by the resident of abuse must be immediately passed on to your supervisor; any witnessed or suspected criminal activity must be reported to the local police department immediately

causing harm to someone due to not fulfilling duties and responsibilities and can jeopardize health, safety, and welfare of a person; failure to answer resident's call light or bell in reasonable period of time; failure to supervise resident's whereabouts; failure to take precautionary measures such as positioning aids to prevent falls; failure to carry out nursing orders

threat to do bodily harm or injury; raising a hand as if to strike someone; threatening to restrain a resident

touching someone without permission, either violently, roughly, or forcing someone to do something they don't want to do; restraining a person without an order from a physician

expose only the part of the body you are bathing or treating; before giving a bed bath, pull all curtains around the bed, pull shapes or drapes, close door, etc.; do not leave bathroom door open; knock before entering a resident's room; treat their room and all personal belonging in a careful, respectful, private manner; maintain confidentiality of records and personal info; insure privacy to married couples

confidential info includes diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, financial status, personal and social info; discuss resident w other health team members only as it pertains to care, and in a private area; refer to charge nurse if you are unsure what to say to someone who asks specific questions about the resident

1996;assures that confidentiality of health info is safeguarded while allowing for access to health info needed to provide high quality health care; applies to health plans and to any health care provider who transmits health info in electronic form; identifies what info can be transmitted and to whom the info can be released

if you are asked to do something illegal, unethical, harmful to the resident, or something you are not allowed to do or not trained to do, you must refuse--explain to the nurse, do not just ignore the order; if the orders are not clear or you are not sure what to do, seek clarification, DO NOT GUESS.

reasons why a CNA could be investigated and possible have their license denied, revoked, or suspended: providing unsafe care; working beyond the scope of practice; violating privacy and confidentiality rights; abusing a person; abandoning a person; stealing, theft, or misuse of property; fraud; being convicted of disqualifying crimes; substance abuse

an employee that may be working w chemicals that may cause injury will be informed by facility administration; each facility has a material safety and data sheets book which identifies what these chemicals are, where they are stored and what to do if someone accidentally drinks it, splashes it in their eyes or gets on their skin

handle and store resident's belongings with care; personal possessions should be listed on a personal possessions inventory list in the resident's record; large items should have their names on it; if something of value is brought, discuss w resident, their family, and charge nurse whether these items should be kept in the office for safe keeping or possibly sent home; clothing must be labeled with name and used exclusively

help residents resolve their problems to their satisfaction or direct them to someone who can; residents have the right to go directly to the administration with their problems; "resident council" meetings

person who represents the resident, investigates complaints and helps resolve problems; promote and protect resident's rights and dignity in situations involving quality of care, use of restraints, abuse, transfer and discharge
