China's Scholar-gentry class

Apart of the landlord class. The name "scholar-gentry" refers to the twin sources of privelege. Those of the scholar-gentry class lived luxeriously, silk, carriages, gambling, and multistoried houses. Generally had the most wealth and power in the Chinese class system.

Wang Mang
