Apart of the landlord class. The name "scholar-gentry" refers to the twin sources of privelege. Those of the scholar-gentry class lived luxeriously, silk, carriages, gambling, and multistoried houses. Generally had the most wealth and power in the Chinese class system.

Called Yellow Turban Rebellion because of the yellow scarves the peasents wore. Peasant bands began to assemble together. Peasent bands found leaders, organization, a common idealogy Daoism. Eventually suppressed by the military. Weakened the state and lead to the overthrow of the dynasty.

Varna composed of 4 ranked classes that you were born into and remained in. 1.Brahmins-priests 2.Kshatriya- rulers and warriors 3.Vaisya class- commoners. Classes 1-3 Pure Aryans who are believed to be twice born. 4.Sudras- servants. Jati are varna groups seperated even more, based upon occupation. Each Jati had its own rules, duties, and obligations.

Launched a series of reforms to counteract the growing power of landowners, during the Han dynasty. Nationalized private estates and divided them among the landless. Ordered the government to give loans to peasants. Limited the amount of land a family could own. Ended private slavery. Reforms not successful and Wang Mang eventually assassinated.

In China Women had the "three obediences" that emphasized a women's subordination first to her father, then to her husband, and finally to her son

A major sign of the patriarchy weakening was the reign of Empress Wu (r. 690-400 b.c.e.). She was the only women to ever rule China as "emperor", she worked to improve the position of women.

Pericles is one of the leading scholars of Athens and is married to Aspasia. Both were equal to each other unlike many of the other Athenian women. They would discuss topics with other scholars.

Helots were the slaves to the Spartans after they conquered their land. They provided the agriculture labor for Sparta and are the reason Sparta is always prepared for an uprising after they rebelled against them

The Indian society seperated its social groups to avoid spiritual pollution. Their rules were very strict and they avoided the untouchables at all cost.

Slavery was vital to the Mediterranean Civilizations' economies. Took up a 1/3 of the population in Athens. Greeks believed it was terrible to be a slave, but wonderul to own one.

Spartan gladiator slave who led other slaves in the Yellow Turban Rebellion against the Government of Sparta. Began a major period of rebellious actions of slaves in the civilization.
