question
Describe the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Why are these ten amendments so important?
answer
These first ten amendments are the Bill of Rights, which ensure the basic rights and freedom of all citizens in the United States. They outline the value of freedom in the U.S. such as with the first amendment, which presents freedom of press, religion, speech, and assembly to all, while other amendments grant further freedom. They are important to the popular sovereignty in the U.S. Through freedom to citizens comes greater power to citizens, which limits the government from abusing power and instead requires government to derive its power from the consent of the governed. The ten amendments embody American values of freedom, liberty, and human rights, while also championing the American political ideology of popular sovereignty and limited government.
question
Consider this question. Think about what you have learned about the Constitution from your textbook, class work, and other sources. You may wish to include information from current events to support your arguments. How has the Constitution endured through changing times?
answer
The Constitution initally generated controversy as demonstrated through the formation of the Anti-Federalist and Federalist parties that respectively represented the detractors and proponents of the Constitution. Regardless, the Constitution proved to prevail amongst criticism and provide the United States with a new political identity separated from Britain's monarchical political system. The Constitution serves as representation of the American ideals of democracy and human liberty, which have not wavered but only been solidified with every generation of Americans. Of course, the Constitution has undergone change whether that be through immediate action of the installation of the Bill of Rights or the 1992 amendment that was "recently" ratified. While the Constitution can be and has been interpreted from various perspectives, the lack of consensus on interpretation has not hindered the effectiveness of the Constitution. Rather, it presents the general application the Constitution is suited for, which perfectly allows for changes to be made and a document that can adjust to modern and eventually future America. The Constitution has endured well through changing times.
