Nurses have been providing care to patients with depression, stress, and anxiety for a long time.
Anxiety disorder refers to a collection of conditions marked by severe fear (McGrandles & Duffy, 2012), which can have detrimental effects on work, social relationships, and family life. Nurses who provide care for individuals with mental health issues must possess the essential abilities to manage their patients' emotions and behaviors. Nevertheless, there may be instances when nurses are unable to adequately meet their patients' emotional requirements.
Nurses have a crucial role in assisting patients in handling stress, fear, and anxiety. They are essential for managing anxiety disorder cases within healthcare facilities and hospitals. Furthermore, nurses offer comprehensive care by utilizing techniques such as deep breathing and massage to reduce levels of stress and anxiety. As a nurse, I am trained to utilize these methods (DiMatteo,
...Lepper & Croghan, 2000). Additionally, nurses can incorporate directed imagery into their practice to further alleviate patient anxiety.
Medical professionals have the responsibility to closely observe and monitor patients who are experiencing stress and anxiety. By spending time with these patients, we can assist them in managing their blood pressure, preventing falls, and addressing other conditions that are associated with stress. Nurses possess the necessary skills to identify and prevent depression in patients. If any unexpected conditions arise, it is important to promptly inform the physician or doctor (McGrandles & Duffy, 2012).
According to DiMatteo et al. (2000), nurses have a significant role in educating patients about their conditions and providing them with the necessary knowledge to manage anxiety. They also act as trusted confidants for individuals with anxiety disorders, often being the first point of contact before
discussing concerns with family or doctors. Hence, it is essential for nurses to prioritize patient confidentiality and find effective ways to support their patients.
Nurses have a significant role in assisting patients in overcoming fear and stress, as these factors greatly impact their work, family, and social life. Furthermore, nurses are expected to fulfill various roles such as being holistic providers, confidants, observers, and educators in managing the patients' condition.
