Bronchodilators – Flashcards

Mechanism of Action: Produce bronchodilation by stimulating production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)

Drugs: Beta-Receptor Blockers Short Acting = Albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin); Tornalate (bilateral mesylate); Primatine Mist (epinephrine); Isuprel (isoproterenol); Xopenex (levoalbuterol); Alupent (metaproternol) Antichalinergic Long Acting = Atrovent Combivent (ipratropium bromide)

Indications: Treat acute bronchospasm (short acting drugs) Prevention of and maintenance therapy for bronchospasms in select patients with COPD, asthma and exercise induced asthma

After Effects: Anxiety, nervousness, tremor, palpitations< tachycardia, HTN, arrhythmias, dry mouth and bronchspasms

Interactions Caffeine - increases drugs adverse effects

Nursing Interventions: Monitor patients v/s administer the drug around the clock as prescribed Don't administer the long acting drug more than prescribed teach patient to maintain fluid intake of 2 - 3 liters a day avoid respirator irritants discuss with patient importance of avoiding caffeine.
