We never learned his name, because throughout his life he has always sought other people approval, constantly needing someone to validate himself. We see evidence of this when the Grandfather whispered to the father, "l wanton to overcome 'me with yeses, undermine 'me with grins, agree 'me to death and destruction, let 'me swollen you until they vomit or bust wide open. 180). Elmer is a man of science that loves his wife, however, he finds her imperfection disgusting.

He is perceived to be a man that only cares about, outer appearances and what others may think. Georgian adores her Cubans and will do anything to satisfy him.

When he is unhappy, then she is sad as well. Indaba, Lemur's manservant, an individual that does not seem to be elated about the actions that his master is taking against his wife. Instead he sees Georgian as a treasure and thee birthmark is

something that makes her even more lovely, which is evident by the statement "If she (Georgian) were my wife, I'd never part with that Hawthorne, 1843, p. 08). Georgians birthmark signifies that being human means there will always be so kind of imperfection, however, ones flaws do not define them as an individual. To Elmer, her birthmark signified imperfection and decay.

Alchemy symbolizes all to Elmer; he believed that it could fix whatever was not flawless, thus, having an advantage over love. Battle Royals showed discrimination, a lot of resentment, a young mane fighting to survive and trying to make something of his life. In The Birthmark there was science, marriage/love and guilt.

The short story Battle Royal is told in the first person.

If it was told in the third person, the narrator would not have been apart of the story or have any connection with it. Thus, the story would have been less effective. The naked blonde symbolizes something that the black boys would never be allowed to have due to the color Of their skin, and the white men used her to rub it. The young mans dream showed his position in society as an African American, a life filled with social inequality and racial discrimination.

In Battle Royal the fear presented was of not behaving oneself as expected. The naked dancer, also brought some fear to the black boys as it was only natural for them to want to look upon this women, while there instinct of survival told them, that if they were to gaze upon this naked white woman meant a dreadful beating, even though some men in the

crowd were cheering them on to look and other were threatening them about if they did so. In the Birthmark, when Georgian went to the lab, she thought that maybe, her husband had been experimenting on her all along.

Nonetheless she still did not fear the consequence of what her husband was doing she had welcome death, if it meant her husband would be free from the thing he saw as being a flaw, her fear came when she felt an unsettling sensation within the birthmark its self. Elmer also had some fears; he feared that he could to remove the birthmark on his wife's cheek. The comparison and contrast of both Battle Royal and The Birthmark revolve around how society sees and treat people that are different especially based on their social status.
