The rule about subjects joined by and is that subjects joined by and require a plural verb so if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural.

A singular subject requires a singular type of verb.

Writers include indirect quotations from others to reinforce their opinion or add emphasis to the topic. An indirect quotation allows writers to paraphrase another person's exact words.

If the verb in the independent clause is in the present tense, the verb in the indirect quotation should remain in its original tense.
