I was particularly fond of the opening quote, “The dragon is by the side of the road, watching those who pass. Beware lest he devour you,” in the story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find."
Initially, the quote "We go to the Father of Souls, but it is necessary to pass by the dragon" didn't have a profound effect on me. Nevertheless, upon completing the story, I found myself compelled to revisit both the quote and the narrative. This undertaking enabled me to acquire a more profound comprehension from it.
From the story, I learned that the more obvious things don't become apparent until a life-changing scenario arises. This is demonstrated through the character of the grandmother who believes she has everything figured out throughout her life but eventually realizes that life isn't as simple as she was raise
...d to believe.
In the narrative, the grandmother learns about an escaped convict known as "The Misfit" and strongly emphasizes that she would never allow her family or anyone she knows near him.
The grandmother comes across as a know-it-all, always needing to have the final word and share her knowledge.
(Which is never wrong in her eyes). In my head, I see the bitter old lady from the story "Driving Miss Daisy." Both the grandmother and the lady from the story have a similar mindset and perspective for that time period. The grandmother, who comes from that era, is also somewhat prejudiced. Towards the end of the story, a chain of unfortunate incidents brings them face to face with "The Misfit." They have a car crash and the Misfit and his companions are the first to arrive at the scene.
Despite
lacking the typical sense of urgency, the three men remained oddly composed. Ultimately, the Misfit and his associates ruthlessly murdered both the grandmother and her family, while she desperately implored for their lives to be spared. Even when every other member of her family had been killed, she persisted in pleading with the Misfit for her own survival.
The Misfit eventually shoots her as well, stating that "She would have been a good woman, if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life." This reminded me of the previous quote regarding the dragon encountered on the road. I interpret this as suggesting that the "Dragon" symbolizes something that presents challenges and compels individuals to contemplate their convictions.
"We go to the Father of Souls," symbolizes the journey towards the afterlife or heaven, according to individual beliefs. On the other hand, "Necessary to pass by the dragon" signifies the inevitability of facing life's lessons. It prompts us to contemplate the trials and tribulations that compel us to examine life's intricacies and perceive the broader perspective.
