The Hollow of Karakura Town
Written by Eric Spicer.
Karakura, a small town in Japan, is home to a solitary teenager who lives isolated within his "house".
Getsuga Kurosaki, aged 17 and sporting pure white hair and skin, resides in a containment cell designed to prevent his escape. He is kept under watch by two oddly attired men carrying halberds, a type of weapon consisting of a staff with an axe head at the end. To clarify his presence in this situation, let me elaborate.
Getsuga, a Hollow or corrupted soul who feeds on human souls, is an incredibly dangerous creature. As a result of dying, the Chain of Fate binds the soul to a specific location, person, or object through a chain protruding from the chest. Breaking the chain allows the soul to move freel
...y but also leads to chain corrosion. To prevent this, Shinigami carry out a Soul Burial ceremony called Konso by tapping the soul's head with the bottom end of the hilt of their specialized sword, Zanpakuto, to send the spirit to Soul Society before substantial corrosion occurs.
When the Chain of Fate is completely eroded prior to the performance of a soul burial, a Hollow void develops in the chest area of the soul where the chain was formerly attached. These souls transform into malevolent spirits known as Hollows and become insane. These Hollows may have the appearance of either a monster or a human-like form. The process can be accelerated by intentionally tearing out the Chain of Fate.
Getsuga's lunch guard did not lock his cell one day. Seizing the opportunity, he used Sonido
a technique that allows him to move faster than sound, to escape unnoticed and run a mile away from his former confinement.
