question
Three major goals of oxygen therapy
answer
1. Reverses Hypoxemia (low o2 concentration of the blood) 2. Decreases the workload of respiratory muscles 3. Decreases the workload of the heart (heart tries to compensate hypoxemia by increasing output)
question
Hazards of oxygen administration
answer
high concentrations of 02 over multiple days can lead to oxygen toxicity. For some people increased oxygen can affect their ventilatory drive control mechanism which actually weakens stimulus to breathe
question
Four Key safety factors of oxygen administration
answer
1. oxygen is highly combustible, do not use matches, cigarettes, or smoking materials while using o2. 2. Do not use oil on oxygen equipment, it can ignite when exposed to 02 3. Use caution when using electrical devices. Could cause spark and ignite the o2 4. Be aware of all sources of sparks
question
what is a pulse oximeter?
answer
device that measures the amount of oxygen saturation in the blood.
question
Where can you attach a pulse oximeter?
answer
fingertip (most common), forehead, bridge of nose, or earlobe.
question
How does a pulse oximeter work?
answer
the sensor detects changes in the amount of oxygen to hemoglobin by monitoring signals generated by the probes beam of light. It determines the level of saturation by estimating blood perfusion at the site.
question
What is the normal pulse oximetry level?
answer
between 95%-100%
question
What factors could affect the pulse oximetry's reading?
answer
moderate to severe anemia, high carbon monoxide levels, client who has just received dye for a diagnostic procedure, fingernail polish
question
What are the 5 sources of oxygen?
answer
wall outlets, oxygen cylinders, oxygen strollers, oxygen concentrators, hyperbaric chambers
question
Wall outlets
answer
oxygen outlet is installed next to each bed in large healthcare facility
question
What are the two categories for oxygen cylinders?
answer
large and small. Large cylinders are generally used when high flow rates are essential or when client requires oxygen for an extended period of time. Small cylinders are used when transporting clients, short term emergencies, or when the client is at home.
question
What is an important safety concern when using oxygen cylinders?
answer
gas within the cylinder is under extremely high pressure and must be reduced before connecting to a person through a regulator with attached flow meter and pressure gauge. Also, if cylinder must be moved secure it in a cylinder cart because if dropped it may become jet-propelled!
question
What is a benefit of an oxygen stroller?
answer
the liquid oxygen within the stroller is denser than gaseous oxygen, but it is lighters and more compact than a steel gas cylinder.
question
What is an oxygen concentrator?
answer
device that compresses room air and extracts oxygen. They are widely used in the home and extended care facilities. The concentrated oxygen range is 1-5 LPM, and is much safer than an oxygen tank.
question
What is a hyperbaric chamber?
answer
high pressure oxygenation. The chamber allows the person to take oxygen into the body in higher concentrations than possible at normal atmospheric pressure. The increased pressure causes the hemoglobin and other blood components to carry more o2. Typically used to treat air or gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisioning, and anaerobic infection (gangrene), crush injuries, and to enhance would healing in necrotizing soft tissue infections
question
What is a nasal cannula?
answer
low flow device used to deliver small to moderate increases in o2 concentrations. Flow rate between 1-6 LPM and oxygen concentration of 24-44%
question
What is a simple mask?
answer
simple mask that fits over the clients nose, mouth, and chin. It is a low flow device with a flow rate of 6-10 LPM and an oxygen concentration of 40-60%
question
What is a partial rebreathing mask?
answer
low flow device identified by presence of bag but no valves. It has a flow rate of 8-11 LPM, and an oxygen concentration of 60-90%. The bag must remain inflated during inspiration and expiration
question
What is a nonrebreathing mask?
answer
low flow device identified by presence of valves on outside of mask as well as between mask and bag. It has a flow rate of 12 LPM and an oxygen concentration of 90-100%. The bag must remain at least 1/3 full at all times. Used only in intensive care units or one on one situations.
question
What is a venturi mask?
answer
high flow device that provides the most reliable and consistent oxygen enrichment. It can be identified by the hard plastic adapter and large windows on the adapter's side. It is often used for PT with COPD. It has a flow rate of 4, 6, or 8 LPM and an oxygen concentration of 24-50%.
question
What is an intermittent positive pressure device?
answer
mechanical device that forces room air or oxygen rich air combined with medication deep into the Pt's lungs. The treatment is usually used for clients that have chronic lung conditions because it allows their lungs to expand more completely and makes the removal of secretions easier
question
What are 5 reasons we used aerosolized mist treatments?
answer
1. adds humidity to certain o2 delivery devices. 2. hydrates thick sputum. 3. administers bronchodilator medications to relax bronchioles narrowed by spasm. 4. administers anti-inflammatory or anti-asthma medications. 5. Delivers antibiotics to the lungs to fight infection
