Recently, I took on the role of director at Prisoners Helper, an organization.
This organization offers assistance and support to prisoners who are nearing their release, specifically those serving sentences of five years or more. It is a non-profit that relies solely on donations from the local community. Participants must agree to make a reasonable and affordable donation after successfully reintegrating into society for one year, which includes maintaining employment for at least six months. To raise funds for prisoner rehabilitation before and after release, we operate thrift stores staffed by program participants and coordinate charity events. It is crucial to provide diverse training programs for both male and female individuals who have spent multiple years in prison in order to effectively reintegrate them into society rather than releasing them unprepared, making them susceptible to becoming another nega
...tive statistic.
We will offer classes on different types of relationships (such as marriage, live-in partners, child, sibling, friend), parenting, financing, finding a job, and basic coping skills to prisoners. After being separated from the outside world, prisoners have their daily tasks taken care of and their entire lives scheduled. These individuals have not had the opportunity to do things that most people overlook and dislike doing themselves. With the constant evolution of the world and emergence of new technology every day, it is only imaginable how challenging it would be to be incarcerated for twenty years and reintegrate into society.
In the past, stores primarily sold clothes and household items, with limited household appliances available. However, nowadays these stores have expanded their offerings to include a wide range of products and services, such as car repairs while shopping. This rapi
expansion may be overwhelming for those trying to stay updated. Luckily, there are classes available to help newcomers adapt to these technological advancements. Mastering the use of new technologies can be particularly challenging for individuals who have spent five or more years in prison.
Understanding and navigating devices or technologies that can change, such as cell phones, computers, televisions, and cars, will require assistance. It can be overwhelming for individuals to acquire a new phone and learn its features. This feeling is even more intense if they haven't had exposure to such technology for 15 years and must independently catch up with all the advancements. Moreover, we will offer techniques to help individuals cope with everyday stresses they have been isolated from during their incarceration. Mastering these stress coping techniques is vital for them to resist temptations.
There will be various temptations that individuals will encounter, and how they handle these temptations will determine the outcome. Many repeat offenders end up back in the prison system because they cannot cope with overwhelming stress and turn to crime, which is their familiar environment. If we can prevent this from happening, then the system will be effective.
Mission Statement: Our objective is to offer support and lend a helping hand to individuals who have completed their prison sentences and are ready to reintegrate into society. We are dedicated to assisting them in adapting to everyday life, including tasks such as cooking, cleaning, parenting, budgeting, obtaining an education, and finding employment. We will guide them in recognizing temptations and teach them how to avoid them. Many individuals who have spent twenty years of their lives in incarceration lack fundamental communication and
coping skills; henceforth, we will aid them in acquiring these skills so that they can identify temptations independently.
We offer aid to individuals of all races, colors, religions, and genders. Whether it is their initial or subsequent release from prison, we are devoted to aiding those who are willing and prepared to accept our help. Our mission statement explicitly states the services we provide and our unwavering dedication to never turning away anyone seeking assistance. Our goal is to support all individuals in reintegrating into society without facing further punishment for their past offenses. It is crucial for them to recognize that they have served their sentence and fulfilled their societal obligations.
Our training program aims to provide support and assistance to individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, with a primary focus on preventing discrimination based on their ethnicity. Moreover, our goal is to assist these individuals in acknowledging that they have completed their sentences and fulfilled their obligations. It is vital for those reintegrating into society to comprehend that their time in prison aimed at rehabilitation and learning from previous errors, ultimately reducing the chances of reoffending. Our main objective is to help these individuals successfully reintegrate into society without any inclination towards future criminal behavior. This statement represents the shared beliefs held by my staff.
Our organization is dedicated to helping individuals in their rehabilitation journey by considering their unique needs and characteristics. We prioritize honesty and transparency, ensuring clients fully understand our offerings and the requirements they must meet. Our goal is to equip them with the skills necessary for becoming valuable members of society as partners, parents, children, or friends. We emphasize the importance of
contributing to both society and family life while addressing challenging emotions that may arise during reintegration into everyday life (such as parenting, employment, and maintaining connections). By doing so, we strive to prevent relapse into substance abuse or criminal activities.
Our aim is to alleviate the challenges caused by various factors in people's lives that can lead them to succumb to temptation. By providing assistance and utilizing coping techniques, we strive to help at least one person avoid returning to prison, thereby positively impacting multiple lives. Incarceration not only affects individuals but also has an impact on their entire family. Through our training and coping skills, we intervene and aim to break the cycle, ultimately benefiting the whole family.
I hope that individuals taught these techniques will resist temptation. The Code of Ethics requires all employees to abide by the ethics and rules of Prisoners Helper. This includes following all legal laws and moral values. Below are the main areas that employees must adhere to. The code is concise and aligns with our mission to prioritize client well-being and dignity.
It is prohibited for employees to accept bribes in order to assist individuals in accessing the program. They are only allowed to receive payment from Prisoners Helper. Any equipment purchased by Prisoners Helper should be used solely for business purposes and not for personal use. Employees are explicitly forbidden from participating in any form of sexual harassment.
Employees are required to adhere to both HIPPA and state laws in relation to the privacy of clients. This encompasses verbal and physical interactions. All information pertaining to program participants will be kept confidential unless authorized in writing. Sharing information with competing
programs is strictly prohibited as it could potentially harm the company.
All employees are expected to perform their assigned tasks without being influenced by personal beliefs or emotions. This includes not making decisions based on religious beliefs or personal feelings. It is crucial for employees to set aside these personal factors in order for the program to be successful. However, if a supervisor gives instructions, an employee may need to modify their decisions accordingly. Furthermore, employees must treat all individuals respectfully and comply with organizational rules and regulations.
Prisoners Helper strictly forbids its employees from engaging in personal or sexual relationships with program participants or supervisors. Furthermore, all employees are expected to consistently demonstrate professional and appropriate conduct. It is of utmost importance that no employee engages in actions that could potentially damage the organization or harm its clients. The organizational culture at Prisoners Helper encompasses a range of different concepts.
Our program aims to benefit both the community and its participants by offering a range of services. It is essential for us to maintain ethical standards and adhere to legal obligations in order to uphold our organization's core values, beliefs, and morals. Our main goal is to support individuals by customizing our approach according to their specific needs.
At Prisoners Helpers, we believe in prioritizing individuality and personalized treatment because we acknowledge the uniqueness of each person's needs. We understand that every case is distinct, so it is crucial to approach each individual differently. To uphold our organization's values, we conduct an ethics audit. As the leader, I personally endorse leading by principles, goals, and integrity. Motivating both employees and program participants falls under my responsibility. In a
Human Services organization, ethical behavior should be central to every leadership position. Our leaders aim to ensure equal treatment for all clients, irrespective of their past experiences.
Leaders need to convey to clients their availability and commitment to helping them enhance their lives. Moreover, leaders should promote teamwork among employees in order to ensure a seamless operation and the delivery of top-notch services. Prisoners Helpers has a board of directors tasked with maintaining the organization's structure. When leaders and directors collaborate harmoniously, the organization functions smoothly. Conversely, if they work in opposition, it leads to various issues that hinder the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.
The leaders and directors will all participate in the ethics audit, allowing them to accurately identify problems and implement necessary solutions. The involvement of everyone in the ethics audit ensures a united focus on helping individuals in the program return to a normal life and thrive.
In terms of cost, keeping someone in prison costs an average of $79 per day, while probation only costs $3.42 daily. This is why Prisoners Helpers can offer multiple benefits - reducing costs and improving individuals' lives. By placing non-violent inmates on probation after serving a certain percentage of their time and sending them to a program like Prisoners Helpers, costs can be reduced during times when every penny matters.
Programs like this can aid in rehabilitating individuals, preventing their return to prison and ultimately saving more money. Out of all released prisoners, 67% are rearrested and 52% are re-incarcerated. If even just one percent of these individuals could be assisted in not returning, consider the significant financial and life-saving impact. Breaking the cycle of crime
within families for one out of every ten prisoners would greatly decrease the number of incarcerated youth. By supporting organizations like this, we not only change the lives of those directly involved but also break the cycle for their children and future generations. It is crucial to look beyond the individual in the program and consider the ripple effect that incarceration has on multiple lives. We must extend our reach and strive to change more than just a single life.
