The EDSA People Power Revolution was a series of popular nonviolent revolutions and prayerful mass street demonstrations that occurred in 1986, which marked the restoration of the country's democracy. It is sometimes referred to as the Yellow Revolution due to the presence of yellow ribbons during the arrival of Benigno Aquino, Jr.. These protests were the culmination of a long campaign of civil resistance by the people against the 20-year running authoritarian, repressive regime of then president Ferdinand Marcos and made news headlines as "the revolution that surprised the world".
February 22–25, 1986, the three days, men, women and children filled the streets of EDSA holding on frail hope. For those brief moments, they feared for their security, their lives, their future. Rumors were spreading all over that the forces from the lo
...yalists were coming in from the north to silence the cry of the people through bullets and shells. The prayers grew louder; anxiety filled the air. From above, the citizens of Manila resembled ants swarming on the entire stretch of EDSA. Most of the streets were blockaded and trees were cut down to serve as makeshift anti-tank barricades.
Curious civilians climbed the 25-ft. light posts to have a glimpse over the crowd. Along the curbs, women attended to the thirsty, hungry and the weary. Men stood vigilant and served as perimeter guards just in case loyalist troops decided to attack. Priests and nuns prayed and comforted people as they made their way through the population with rosaries at hand. Tanks were on the other edge of EDSA, and the people had no hesitation to meet them with bare hands and prayers. Soldiers aboard the vehicle
climbed out and were ordered to shoot.
Most either shot in the air or were simply shocked at the amount of sacrifice ordinary people are willing to gamble. Tears rolled down their eyes as they were greeted with food and comfort from the rebels. EDSA revolution successfully revoked the Marcos administration and restored democracy and peace, and give hope to many youth to continue their dreams. Cory Aquino took place as a president, she fought Marcos together with millions of mass support and diligent prayers. This history brought a brighter days for individuality. Today, the democracy provide us freedom for making our own life and choosing our own destiny.
This era started to build a better economic system, new building structures, and a safer shelter. The deaf administration was healed and start to hear the voices of the needing people and opinions of the million Filipino observer to improve our country. The human rights have been restored to every dignity of Filipino people. As the product of the Revolution held by the hardship of our parents and our fellowmen, we must not waste their eagerness to provide us a comfortable life.
