It is likely that members of an organization assume they can escape any consequences because they hold higher positions. If this is the situation, hiring people like Bryan to investigate the work environment becomes meaningless. They perhaps assume that being the boss exempts them from investigation or reporting. However, no one should be exempted. In Bryan's case, it is evident that he did not perceive the company's decision as delivering ultimate justice.

The question arises: should he have taken the issue to the authorities, or was it sufficient to report the problem through proper channels and let the organization handle it, as Linn Hynds recommended? I believe Bryan made the right choice. He informed the organization

Although it is part of your job to address such matters, deciding to involve the organization demonstrates considerable courage.

If the offender had been a significant client or the company's CIO, the circumstances might have been handled differently. The company could have found a means to dismiss Bryan solely for causing conflict with such a high-ranking individual. Bryan's main concern was retaining his job, so reporting the matter to the authorities may have appeared as though he was attempting to bypass the organization and distrust their judgment.

There is a potential consequence of termination in the mentioned situation. Ultimately, individuals must prioritize their own self-interest and may need to disregard certain issues. We all have our convictions, and in Gary's case, he chose not to prevent his boss from installing unlicensed software despite refusing to do so himself. Is there a difference between refraining from an act and failing to intervene when someone else does it if installing unlicensed software is deemed wrong?
