Approximately six million Jews perished in the Holocaust.
The book Maus depicts Artie's endeavor to write a book about his father Vladek's World War II and Holocaust experiences. The characters in this graphic novel are depicted as animals, with mice representing Jews and cats symbolizing Nazis. This allegorical representation suggests that dogs symbolize superiority over cats. In Art Spiegelman's Maus, Vladek is portrayed as an intelligent, brave, and considerate individual. Throughout the entirety of the narrative, Vladek showcases his intellect by making prudent decisions that contribute to his survival, such as knowing when to scavenge for food or when to relocate like when he and Anja sought refuge in the mouse hole.
Vladek would venture out at night, risking his life, in search of food. He was well-aware that attempting to disguise himself as a Polish worker would only
...result in his own demise. Vladek relied on his intelligence to procure food and necessities for himself and Anja. For instance, he engaged in black market dealings without ration coupons to obtain provisions. While others involved in such activities were hanged, Vladek managed to evade detection.
Only individuals who were fortunate or intelligent like Vladek managed to survive the war. Vladek displayed immense courage, which greatly aided the survival of his loved ones and companions. He consistently undertook substantial risks to locate and acquire food. A notable instance was when Vladek and Anja sought shelter in a barn; despite the dangers involved, Vladek would venture out and seamlessly mingle with the Polish citizens in order to obtain food, narrowly avoiding capture each time.
Vladek consistently sought out the most secure locations he was aware of, even if it entaile
taking significant risks. When Vladek instructed Anja to clandestinely enter Hungary, he recognized the high likelihood of being discovered but believed it to be the optimal destination. Consequently, Vladek relied on his courage to attempt rescuing both Anja and himself. The companions and relatives of Vladek were incredibly fortunate to have such a valiant individual supporting them during the war.
