The Territorial Army, created in 1920 by the British under the Indian Territorial Act of 1920, had two wings: 'The Auxiliary Force' for Europeans & Anglo-Indians and 'The Indian Territorial Force' for Indian Volunteers. After India gained independence, the Territorial Army Act was enacted in 1948, and on October 9th, 1949, it was officially inaugurated by Shri C Rajagopalachari, the first Indian Governor General.
The date is celebrated annually as Prime Minister's TA Day Parade. Originally, the Territorial Army had different types of units such as Armed Regt (TA), Infantry Battalion (TA), Air Defence (TA), Med Regt (TA), Engineers Field Park Coy (TA), Signal Regiment (TA), EME Workshop (TA), Coast Battery (TA), ASC GT Coy (TA), ASC Compo Pl(TA) and AMC Field Ambulance(TA). The men of TA have actively participated in various adventure activities, with scaling Mt Tengchen being particularly famous.
