Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare around 1594. The play Romeo and Juliet is about two start crossed lovers who were born into a world with an ‘ancient grudge’. This automatically leads to Romeo and Juliet’s death. This sorrowful play was performed in Globe Theatre as there was large number of people who entirely wanted to watch this interesting play immediately.
According to the play it contains a strong violent, and conflict, however Shakespeare uses conflict in different ways throughout the play, he uses to reflect on how woman were treated back in the Elizabethan period, how the marriage partner was chosen by father and how many were expected to obey the man. Additionally, this play there was a long feud between the Montague and Capulet families whom disrupted the city of Verona and causes trag
...ic results for Romeo and Juliet. The feud between the Montague’s and Capulet’s is the main theme throughout the play. There was hate between the two families; even the servants hated each other.
This caused huge problems for Romeo and Juliet and this is why they kept their marriage in secret. If their parents discovered their secret, they would have made their children's lives miserable. In act 5 scene 3 the letter to Romeo in Mantua does not get delivered. Instead Romeo's servant, Balthasar, tells him that Juliet is dead.
Romeo returns to the Capulet tomb with poison he has bought, as he drinks the poison and dies next to his wife. When Juliet awakes in the vault, she is overcome with grief and stabs herself. The death of the two young lovers finally ends the years of bad blood between the Montague’s and th
Capulet’s. The two households lost their only child’s and no one left in their families to carry their famous names.
Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet, the audience knows that Romeo and Juliet fall in love and cannot make it work because of family conflict; additionally, the audience knew that it would end both of them losing their lives. It was an expected tragedy. The audience always had an idea of what was going and happening in the play, therefore it was not a big deal for the audience to see the scene were Juliet's father plans to marry her off to Paris. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare frequently uses dramatic irony, a situation where the audience knows more than the characters do. Romeo becomes part of the terrible consequences of dramatic irony when he believes Juliet has died.
He does not know the plan created by Friar Lawrence, and kills himself when seeing her dead. This sad twist is perhaps the most important usage in the whole play, in demonstrating Romeo's love.Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to show how essential Juliet is to Romeo, and how powerful their love is. In act 5 scene 3 is the last scene that the audience see both Romeo and Juliet alive and Shakespeare made it very dramatic.
It was creepy night, the howling wind was clearly shaking the dark long trees and the beautiful clouds were slightly moving around in the blue skies above. As Romeo arrived the church yard, this automatically adds to tension as it engages the audience clearly to know that Romeo is about to kill himself. Dramatic tension is a very important element in a successful
play.In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses dramatic tension to keep the play live and make the audience to interest what would happen later in the play.
In act 5 scene 3 there is stage direction where Romeo is facing the audience “I’m almost afraid to stand alone, here in the churchyard, yet I will adventure”, Romeo is clearly talking to himself in graveyard, and he is saying that he will take the risk no matter what. In scene 5 scene 3 Romeo is not told of Juliet's plan soon enough and therefore is led to believe that Juliet is actually dead and he desperately does not want to live without her.In this scene the action begins with Paris and his page arriving in the churchyard that night. As Paris enters the old church, he orders the page to withdraw, then begins scattering flowers on Juliet’s grave. The innocent Paris hears a whistle. “What cursed foot wanders this way tonight” the servant warning that someone is coming towards them.
Romeo suddenly enters the church with Balthasar. “Hold, take this letter, early in the morning see thou deliver it to my lord and father”.This is the first thing Romeo said when they arrived the dark churchyard; however the audience knows it is a suicide letter to his father and the reason why he killed himself. Romeo suddenly makes an excuse to Balthasar that he has come to get ring he had given to Juliet and then he orders Balthasar to leave. In act 5 scene 3 Romeo uses soliloquies throughout the play scene which are full of emotion.
Romeo goes to Juliet in the tomb and grieves for
her once more. Romeo directly looked at Juliet as he was almost logically struggling and cannot except that Juliet is dead, as she is still beautiful. Finally, in the throes of sorrow, he drinks his deadly potion after stealing one last kiss. At this part the audience jumped out their seats and knows the fact Juliet is still live and the final kiss suggests that there was a strong love between Romeo and Juliet.
Shakespeare enforces a belief of the times that too much love makes a man lose his manliness. As he dies; the Friar Laurence arrives in the churchyard and meets Balthasar. “It doth so, holy sir, and there’s my master one that you know”. Balthasar tells the Friar that Romeo is in the tomb, and the Friar hurries to right the situation.
As Friar Laurence enters the tomb, he sees Paris and Romeo dead as he notices Juliet awakening. Juliet asks for Romeo “where is my Romeo”. The Friar sadly tells her that not only is her husband dead, but Paris as well. He asks her to leave with him, but Juliet does not go. She kisses Romeo's still warm lips and stabs herself with her beloved's dagger. Friar Lawrence is helpful person who is not afraid to take risks when he feels it is necessary to help someone.
According to the play, all his plans goes wrong. He marries the start cross lover as he hopes that the marriage will end the hostilities between the two houses, which was the worst. Friar Lawrence is clearly helping the two lovers to become successful. Additionally, when he says "Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and
this distilled liquor drink though off;" he is suggesting that Juliet should drink a sleepy potion to avoid marrying Paris next day.
The audience knows that this was an extremely risky thing; however this also goes wrong as Friar Lawrence did not told Romeo Juliet’s plan soon enough accordingly he leads to believe that his wife Juliet is tragically died. The audience clearly believes that Juliet is dead and they extremely felt sorrowful. In addition the audience thinks that Shakespeare makes Juliet to stab herself because he wanted to show the audience what love can causes, to prove that also Juliet cannot live without her Romeo and to show how powerful their love was. Shakespeare uses this scene to emphasize how fragile the lovers’ romance is, and how outside forces will act to destroy it. Meanwhile, outside the tomb, all present are held to wait for the Prince to arrive.
The Capulet’s are told that their daughter, once dead, was again warm and yet dead again, which destroys the man and his wife. The Balthasar confirms the story and presents Romeo's letter to the Prince. The Prince finds Romeo's letter to confirm the Friar's words, and he speaks harshly to the Montague’s and Capulet’s because of their hatred toward each other, “as rich shall Romeo’s by his lady’s lie; poor sacrifices of our enemies” this suggests that they have sacrificed their most beloved. O brother Montague gives me thy hand”. They both clearly realized the wrong thing they were doing in several years and joins the hands together as they grieve. Tybelt is vain, fashionable, and supremely aware of courtesy; in the play he becomes aggressive, violent, and
quick to draw his sword.
In this part Shakespeare develop conflict and violence through the use of language and this is shown when Mercutio is provoking Tybelt. Mercutio loves provoking Tybalt and can also be calm and act as a joker. When he says “by my heal, I care not” this shows that he is not scared of Tybelt and he is prepared for anything. Mercutio can also be easily angered in short tempered. This is shown when he says “Consort? What dost thou make us minstrels? , look to hear nothing but discords. ” He twisted Tybalt words and accused him of calling them jokers and entertainers.
On the other hand Tybalt is initially acting calmly but in an assertive manner because he arrives on the scene with a purpose mind. This is evident when he says to Mercutio “well, peace be with you, sir, here comes my man”.This is shown the audience that as much as Tybalt is provoked by Mercutio, he is not going to fight him because he wants to get his revenge on Romeo. The audience learns from Tybalt’s aggressive behavior, as he is completely behaving foolishly and he focuses his hatred on Romeo. Romeo is sad, melancholic, apathetic youth.
His reason for sadness is universal; Juliet his love will not return his affections. Romeo is not interested in the quarrel between the two families, and doesn't mention Tybalt before but Tybalt tries to get him to fight. They both have conflict as they are behaving completely unreasonable. At the moment Tybalt kills Mercutio, his ample anger pulls Romeo back into the world of hatred and made him behave preposterously.
This hatred
and hostility also further gains sympathy for Romeo as the fact that Tybalt was a murder is overlooked. “Tybalt take the villain back again, for Mercutio’s soul, either thou or I, or both must to go with him” Romeo’s killing of Tybalt was carried out in the heat of the moment, his action has threatened the public order of Verona and the Prince has no alternative.Romeo’s cry is in desperation and frustration due to his misfortune in having to kill his wife’s cousin and getting himself banished. Romeo later realizes the consequence of what he has done, this is shown when he says “ I am fortunes fool” Romeo’s life may not have paid “ the forfeit of the peace” however his punishment of being banished was just as bad, if not worst as he has lost his family and Juliet. The audience is brought back to the reality of the streets of Verona by this violent scene. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Lord Capulet's behavior is in addition inconsistent at best.
In the streets of Verona he is as impetuous as the youths, calling for a sword to run through his enemy Lord Montague. The most important thing to note about this final scene is how quickly the action moves. In just a few short pages, all of the characters come together and their individual providing an end to all of the forwards Shakespeare presented throughout the play. Shakespeare develops the conflict and violence between the two families, because he wanted to show the “ancient grudge” could be broken by the two start crossed lovers, who gave their lives for what they believed in.
