Types of Concrete and their Sustainability Concrete was first made with fragments of stone or sand mixed with cementatous materials and water.

Concrete has changed over the many years and today it is made with basically the same materials, but the main differences between concrete when it was first made and now, is the concretes strength and that it is produced in larger amounts. Some of the different types are: •Reinforced concrete •Prestressed concrete •Pre-cast concrete •Concrete Masonry •Air-entrained concrete •High early strength concrete •and Lightweight concrete What Concrete DoesConcrete, artificial engineering material made from a mixture of Portland cement, water, fine and coarse aggregates, and a small amount of air. ous materials, water, aggregate and coarse aggregate. Concrete is used to make most of the things you would see in your everyday life. These things could include roads, telephone poles, sculptures, park benches, flowerpots, houses and the list goes on. How Concrete Works The way concrete works is by solidifying and hardening after the mixing process has taken place.

This happens because of the chemical process known as hydration. This is when the water reacts with the cement, causing the other components to bond together. This eventually makes a stone like material, concrete. The two major components of concrete are a cement paste and inert materials. The cement paste consists of Portland cement, water, and some air either in the form of naturally entrapped air voids or air bubbles.

The inert materials are usually composed of fine aggregate (which is a material such as sand) an

coarse aggregate, such as gravel, crushed stone, or slag.In general, fine aggregate particles are smaller than 6. 4 mm in size, and coarse aggregate particles are larger. Depending on the thickness of the structure to be built, the size of coarse aggregate particles used can vary widely.

In building relatively thin sections, a small size of coarse aggregate, with particles about 6. 4 mm in size, is used. At the other extreme, aggregates up to 15 cm (6 in) or more in diameter are used in large dams. In general the maximum size of coarse aggregates should not be larger than one fifth of the narrowest dimensions of the concrete member in which it is used.

The History of Concrete The history of concrete dates back to 3000BC. The Egyptians used a bonding substance that used lime and gypsum cement. In Serbia, remains of a hut dating from 5600 BC have been found, with a floor made of red lime, sand, and gravel. The actual inventors of concrete were the Romans. The recipe the Romans used had a mixture of lime mortar, volcanic sand, water and small stones.

The mixture was placed in wooden frames and left to dry and start to bond with a facing of brick or stone in a procedure like casting statues in bronze or other metals.John Smeaton invented the first modern concrete (hydraulic cement) by adding pebbles as a coarse aggregate and mixing powdered brick into the cement. An English inventor Joseph Aspdin invented Portland cement, which has remained the dominant cement used in concrete production. The first artificial cement was created by Joseph Aspdin by burning ground limestone and clay together. Why

Concrete is The Most Important Invention of All Time Concrete has changed the world around us and it has changed the way we live today.

This is one of the main reasons why concrete is so important, because it has changed the world.Without concrete buildings would not be standing, there would be no highways to drive on; just dirt roads, most houses would not be standing and many other things may not have been invented or may not be as strong as it could be with concrete. Concrete is used everyday all over the world. Millions of people use concrete, whether it is part of their job or if they have to do something in their backyard. People use this concrete for all kinds of things and the way they do it is very simple.

First buy a bag of cement and some sand, then mix them together with water and put the mixture where you want.Once this is done you wait for it to dry. This is one of the reasons why concrete is so great, because it’s simple to use. Concrete has made so many other inventions possible, or in a lot of cases better.

Images of Concrete Concrete Bridge Modern bridge construction for the Gateway Bridge over the Brisbane River in Australia uses lightweight and durable concrete reinforced with steel bars or mesh. Concrete is made from three components: an aggregate material such as sand or gravel, water, and the binding agent, portland cement.
