Italian Renaissance humanism flowed to Northern Europe and led to the emergence of Christian humanism. The focus on classical learning and emphasis on the individual continued. The Christian humanist Desiderius Erasmus, a Catholic priest, was openly critical of the excesses and clerical abuses of the Catholic Church.
