question
Where is the devil and Tom walker
answer
Boston, 35 years after Salem witch trials
question
Were you surprised by tom's actions in this story? Why or why not?
answer
No, I wasn't surprised by his actions because his motivation was greed. His greed for money was bigger than his knowledge that it wasn't the right thing to do. He was so caught up in the money that he didn't realize until after he shouldn't have done it.
question
What does the devil offer Tom? What factor contributes to tom's initial refusal?
answer
He offers him the riches hidden by Captain Kidd if he will sell his soul to the devil. He thinks it would be bad on his conscience.
question
What happens to tom's wife? What do you learn about Tom, based on his reaction to the loss of his wife?
answer
After hearing about Tom refusal, she goes into the woods to sell her soul. He ultimately cared more for his passions than his own wife.
question
What agreement does Tom ultimately make with the devil? As the story progresses why do you think Tom begins to go to church and carry a bible around with him at all times?
answer
He ultimately sells his soul. I think he was scared of going to hell. I think he tried to be a good Christian bc he knew the devil was going to come and take him to hell. He was trying to escape his fate.
question
What kind of people do you think Tom and his wife are?
answer
I think that they are just normal people that let earthly things (money) come in and take over and control their life. They wanted so much money they were willing to do anything for it even if it means selling themselves.
question
Do you think Tom deserved this fate? Why or why not? Would you have felt more sympathy for Tom if he exchanged his soul for knowledge and not money?
answer
I think he deserved this fate because he didn't have to sell his soul to the devil. He could have easily said no but he let his greed control his life and made his own decision. I wouldn't feel any differently if he sold if for knowledge instead of money bc he still sold it.

The poem does because thinking about how death is real shows there is only life. He hopes for Lenore to return but the raven shows him death is real and she won't which shows us a lesson about how death is real.
question
Why is the speaker reading at the beginning of the poem? What is his emotional state as the poem begins?

He's trying to distract himself from his sorrow. He is grieving and curious and then becomes scared and foreboding
question

answer
He is startled and amused. He blames the death of Lenore on the raven and it not telling him what he wanted to hear is a sign of his insanity. At first he didn't think the raven would respond but soon he finds out that he speaks more with the raven he becomes agitated. His sanity will never more be present.
