Each nurse is accountable to the public and responsible for ensuring that her/his practice and conduct meets legislative requirements and the standards of the profession.

N are responsible for their actions &the consequences of those actions. They are accountable for conducting themselves in ways that promote respect for the profession. N are not accountable for decision or actions of others care when there was not way of knowing about those actions

- identifying him/herself and explaining their role to clients; - providing, facilitating, advocating and promoting the best possible care for clients; - advocating on behalf of clients; - sharing nursing knowledge and expertise with others to meet client needs

Each nurse maintains and continually improves her/his competence by participating in the College of Nurses of Ontario's Quality Assurance (QA) Program

Competence is the N ability to use their judgement, attitudes, values & beliefs to perform in a given role, situation & practice setting. CC ensures N are able to perform in changing HC environment. CC also contributes to quality of N practice & increases public confidence in the profession. Participation in QA program helps N engage in activities that promote or foster lifelong learning. QA helps N maintain & improve their competence and is a professional requirement.

- investing time, effort and other resources to improve knowledge, skills and judgment - engaging in a learning process to enhance her/his practice - advocating for quality practice improvements in the workplace - providing colleagues with feedback that encourages professional growth

Each nurse understands, upholds and promotes the values and beliefs described in CNO's Ethics practice standard.

Ethical N care means promoting the values of C well-being, C choice, privacy & confidentiality, respecting the sanctity & quality of life, maintaining commitments, truthfulness & fairness in use of resources. It also includes acting with integrity, honesty, & professionalism in all dealings with C and other HCP.

- identifying ethical issues and communicating them to the health care team; - identifying options to resolve ethical issues; - evaluating the effectiveness of the actions taken to resolve ethical issues; - identifying personal values and ensuring they do not conflict with professional practice.

Each nurse possess, through basic education and continuing learning, knowledge relevant to his/her professional practice

RNs study to achieve greater breath and depth of K in clinical practice, decision making, critical thinking, research utilization, HC delivery systems & resource management. All N add to their basic education and foundational K by pursuing ongoing learning throughout their careers.

- providing a theoretical and/or evidence-based rationale for all decisions - being informed about nursing and its relationships in the health care delivery system - understanding the knowledge required to meet the needs of complex clients - seeking and reviewing research in nursing, the health sciences and related disciplines

Each nurse continually improves the application of professional knowledge

Quality of professional N practice reflects N application of K. N apply K to practice using N frameworks, theories &/or processes. They employ K in the performance of clinical skills b/c technical & cognitive aspects of care are closely related and cannot be separated.

- ensuring that practice is based in theory and evidence and meets all relevant standards/ guidelines - using best-practice guidelines to address client concerns and needs - assessing/describing the client situation using a theory, framework or evidence-based tool - planning approaches to providing care/service with the client

Each nurse demonstrates his/her leadership by providing, facilitating, and promoting the best possible care/service to the public

L requires self-K (understanding one's beliefs, values, & being are of how one's behaviour affects others), respect, trust, integrity, shared vision, learning, participation , good communication, & the ability to be a change facilitator. L expectation is not limited to formal positions. All N regardless of their position have opportunities for L.

- role-modelling professional values, beliefs and attributes - acting as a role model and mentor to less- experienced nurses and students - providing leadership through formal and informal roles (e.g., team leader, charge nurse) - taking action to resolve conflict

Each nurse establishes and maintains respectful, collaborative, therapeutic and professional relationships

R include therapeutic N-client R & professional R with colleagues, HC team and employers.

- demonstrating respect and empathy for, and interest in clients - ensuring clients' needs remain the focus of nurse-client relationships - recognizing the potential for client abuse - taking action to stop abuse and reporting it appropriately

The client's needs are the focus of the relationship, which is based on trust, respect, intimacy and the appropriate use of power. Nurses demonstrate empathy and caring in all relationships with clients, families and significant others. It is the responsibility of the nurse to establish and maintain the therapeutic relationship.

Professional relationships are based on trust and respect, and result in improved client care.

- role-modelling positive collegial relationships - sharing knowledge with others to promote the best possible outcomes for clients - developing networks to share knowledge of best practices - demonstrating effective conflict-resolution skills
