Before enrolling in their academic programs, colleges and universities require students to have a general education background.
Enrolling in a diploma, degree, or any higher education certificate is necessary to be considered. This is because general education provides the fundamental skills, values, and habits needed for success in professional and career majors during college and after graduation. General education is typically developed through a core curriculum that all students must complete, regardless of their chosen course. Some institutions have their own curriculum that requires specific courses during the junior year, while others rely on skills acquired in previous school levels. Despite student complaints about these requirements and their lack of understanding about why they are mandatory, they play a crucial role in preparing individuals for college and beyond. The importance of having basic or general knowledge cannot be understated. This knowledge serves as a crucial foundation for students to comprehend and excel in new academic concepts and systems. Additionally, it helps students establish connections between related ideas in integrated college courses. For instance, quantitative and qualitative analysis is a required course that demands mathematical skills acquired during previous schooling for both simple and complex calculations. Effective communication with fellow students through language skills, particularly English, is indispensable for assignments, group discussions, and other collaborative activities. College treats students as aspiring professionals in their chosen fields who are anticipated to offer solutions to real-life problems.
Studies have indicated that applying basic skills learned in school is often more advantageous than the
specific knowledge acquired in higher education. Many employed individuals utilize their foundational knowledge and skills to navigate technical and social challenges within organizations, underscoring the importance of a well-rounded education in tackling societal issues (Bell & Truman, 2010). College courses can also enhance general knowledge in certain cases. For example, individuals pursuing careers as educators or tutors in subjects like math or English are typically required to possess basic proficiency in those areas.
Obtaining general knowledge may not be crucial from a different perspective, as it takes a significant amount of time to develop these skills during school or junior college. Consequently, individuals may not be able to pursue their desired careers or professions at a young age. Moreover, subjects like physical sciences and mathematics are often seen as challenging and require individuals with a strong passion, which might discourage potential students from enrolling in college. This is viewed as a disadvantage (Lattuc & Stark, 2011).
In conclusion, while recognizing general education as a requirement in college is important, implementing reforms to ensure there is a reasonable balance becomes necessary.
It is evident that there is no valid criticism of eliminating general education in college as its advantages outweigh any shortcomings or limitations.
