mprove the rates of student success, some challenges that range from; psychological barriers, lack of institution support, shortage of advisers and lack of adequate support services ought to be addressed appropriately.

Student Success At UCSC

One of the major strategies that can help students to improve the success rates at UCSC is addressing the psychological barriers that prevent the students from succeeding at the university. Some of the well-noticed forms of psychological barriers to the students is putting it in the mind that some subjects are harder than others or the students feels that some subjects were not meant for them. One of the subjects and field of study that has been associated with students growing a negativity towards is maths. A lot of students have put in their brains that understanding maths is a puzzle to them. According to

report from the Mathematical Association of America math was said to be the major obstacle to student success (David 2016). Therefore, if UCSC can organize motivational seminars and invite psychologists who can convince the students that one can learn and understand any subject regardless of the complexity of the subject of interest.

Secondly, the other policy that can help improve the success rate of students at UCSC is supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds. It has been very challenging for students from underrepresented backgrounds to succeed in colleges. The underrepresented ethnic backgrounds students lack the motivation to excel owing to the fact that there has been a very little percentage of people from their backgrounds that have succeeded in higher institutions of learning. To be precise, black students hardly find their way in the major universities as a result of their poor family backgrounds or just due to stereotyping that is a major challenge facing the underrepresented ethnic backgrounds. Some of the other issues that prevent the people from the underrepresented ethnic groups include the financial constraints that limit them from affording the cost of acquiring quality education from any college of their choice. Financial constraints have been a barrier that has resulted in a lot of students from the underrepresented ethnic backgrounds ( NIKOLE, 2015).

Additionally, the other strategy that the University of California Santa Cruz can use to improve the success rate among students is trying to do follow ups for the new students so as to assess their capabilities and challenges. The policy of being so concerned about the capabilities and challenges of the fresh students will enable the institution to identify students who need

special attention. In case a student might have attended a previous institution that never convered all the necessary courses the student should be taught the courses if they are relevant to the field they are studying at the university. A good example is finding a student from the underrepresented backgrounds who has not had advanced placement biology and chemistry in a medical school because the high school they went through did not offer this important courses. ‘‘I wanted to be a doctor,’’ he said. ‘‘But I did not even know what the periodic table was ”( NIKOLE, 2015).

Finally, the other policy that can enable the UCSC to improve the student success is through giving constructive feedback to restore trust in the people from underrepresented backgrounds. The people from minority backgrounds usually drop out of colleges and institutions of higher education because either of the remarks given by their lecturers. If the feedback is demotivating the people from the minority ethnic backgrounds, tend to flunk out of school because of lack of motivation to keep it up. There is nothing challenging like feeling inferior in a group or in society. Human beings are social beings that keep much sensitivity to the way people handle or think about them. Therefore, it means that any negative feedback from the professors and lecturers might contribute a lot to the success rates of students from minority backgrounds.

Conclusion

To sum up, the university of California Santa Cruz ought to improve the success rates of students. There are a few obstacles that need to be addressed so as to improve the success rates of students. Some of the policies that ought to be

implemented include, offering support to students from minority backgrounds, minding the feedback professors give to students and offering psychological and emotional support to students.
