The song “Waving Through A Window” is from the musical Dear Evan Hansen. Dear Evan Hansen is written by Benji Pasek, Justin Paul (music and lyrics), and Steven Levenson (book). The show opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theater in December of 2016. Before it opened on Broadway, the show debuted in Washington D.C in 2015 at the Arena Stage and then moved onto off-Broadway productions at the Second Stage Theater in early 2016. Dear Evan Hansen was immensely successful with nine Tony nominations (winning six). The show also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
The first national tour of this show just kicked off this month in Denver! The show takes place in modern day life of high schooler Evan Hansen with no specific setting due to the goal of being a rela
...table story to anyone possibly going through similar difficulties as the characters in the show. Today, Broadway is extremely successful and influential in our society. Evan Hansen sings the song “Waving Through A Window” as the second song of Dear Evan Hansen. Evan Hansen is a high school senior dealing with social anxiety. He goes to therapy to help him with this issue and is given the assignment to write a letter about how each day will be a good day (leading to the plot of the story). Evan has always struggled to make friends due to his awkwardness and struggle to “fit in”. Evan does not like himself and experiences a lot of personal pain and weight throughout the show. Evan has attempted to kill himself by jumping off a tall tree, but only broke his arm as a
result (hence his cast).
Evan only has his mom, Heidi, who is very busy trying to earn money to support the two of them. Their relationship is rocky due to Evan’s struggle going unnoticed by his mother and his anger towards feeling like she uses him to validate herself. Evan does not accept himself for who he is and find himself lying in order to create a life he wants. Evan sings “Waving Through A Window” at school in the hallway filled with his peers. He tries to get his sort-of friend Jared and another girl he knows, Alana, to sign his cast but both of them refuse. Then Evan runs into Connor, Zoe’s brother, and is misinterpreted by Connor as making fun of him rather than just being awkward. Connor then pushes Evan to the ground convinced Evan is just being a jerk. Zoe sees the encounter and feels the need to apologize for her brother’s behavior to Evan. After Evan tries and fails to connect with Zoe he is stricken by the build of all the failures he has encountered already that day. Filled with shame and convinced he is an outcast and not significant to anybody in his life, Evan sings “Waving Through A Window” as an anthem.
Feeling stuck in the “window” society has created for him, Evan ponders if he will always be ignored and treated like trash by everyone around him. Throughout the song, it is revealed that Evan is so desperate to be noticed and validated that it is made clear Evan values what others think of him more than he does. This song is basically Evan’s cry for help
and change of his circumstances as he endures the pain of always feeling disliked and unwanted, an outsider essentially. This song feels like it fits my voice well. I have difficulty projecting my lower notes when I am singing the line “When you’re falling in a forest…” and I have a hard time belting up on the “Waving” after the key change of the song. The ending is also difficult with the melodic line starting at a B consistently (Is anybody waving, waving, waving, woah).
I also think the agility the song demands throughout can be a challenge for me at times. I really like the song, and I think the character and emotions that Evan is going through are a fun challenge to rise to. I think I easily connect with the story and feel so much empathy for my character. Hopefully, I will successfully translate that into my performance.
