Human beings have always attempted to look for different pressure by the use of diverse chemical substances. These chemicals have eventually led to irreparable damage to the human body and society respectively. Alcohol is one but not the last in the list which can be termed effective. It is one of the most popular recreational drugs around the world.
It acts as a depressant that slows down the functioning of the nervous and the brain system and therefore changing the feelings of the individual. Alcohol is a made when sugar and yeast breaks down in absence of oxygen. It has considerable consumer expenditure and thus is highly associated with substantial government tax. Globally, EU is the leading industry on alcohol production and marketing. Most of the people take alcohol to improve their short term moods.
However, these moods can be ma
...naged or regulated depending on the quantity consumed. At high doses, it depresses the central nervous system while at low doses; it acts as a stimulant and therefore inducing the feelings of talkativeness and euphoria. However, this paper should compare both merits and demerits of alcohol and come up with a one sided conclusion. Most people tend to ignore that alcohol is an additive substance. Moderate alcohol consumption has a substantial health benefits.
A glass of wine after a meal or one bottle of bear is acceptable in most of the societies. Alcohol is good as it lowers the risks of getting cardiovascular diseases. Regulated amount of alcohol in the body lowers the level of high density lipoprotein and cholesterol which helps in protecting the heart against diseases. Alcohol has been associated with positive benefits ranging from improvemen
of blood clotting, good sensitivity to insulin.
These factors help to prevent the formation of small clots of blood that may block the brain, heart veins and arteries. Blockage of these parts may lead to heart attack and eventually stroke. People suffering from cardiovascular disease are advised to take a little alcohol. Alcohol also lowers the chances of getting diabetes. Adults who take at most two glasses after every forty eight hours have a considerable decreased chance of developing diabetes compared to those who don’t drink. Alcohol improves libido.
In contrary to the older beliefs, new research has proven that moderate taking of alcohol can prevent erectile dysfunctions. In the book “Overcoming fear with Mindfulness”, it is clear that a chance of erectility reduces by thirty percent to the alcoholic individuals. Persistent use of alcohol has been proved to induce sexual dysfunction and therefore marking a distress as well as interpersonal problems. In addition, alcohol contains an antioxidant which helps to conquer cold and fight off fear and anxiety. It is a fact that most of the people do insist for a brandy, whisky or a hot toddy when it comes to remedy colds. Moderate drinkers have a high resistance to cold.
Alcohol has an ability to kill germs in the bloodstream and therefore stop cold in the blood tracks. Researches from Spain have found that taking nine to twelve glasses of alcohol weekly, the risk of developing cold will be reduced by sixty five percent. In addition, alcohol helps in boosting confidence and fighting off anxiety and fear. It opens up creativity, happiness and talkativeness.
On the other hand, alcohol is not good at all as it has
dangerous effects in it. On the body, it affects every part of the body as well as damaging a developing fetus to a pregnant mother. Intoxication impairs the normal functioning of the brain as well as affecting the motor skills. Physically, heavy drinking leads to addiction which can lead to increase in risks of stroke, cancer and liver problems.
The function of the liver is to clean the organisms from the chemicals in alcohol. The moment the alcohol gets to the bloodstream, the blood with these chemicals flows to the liver and thus affecting the normal functioning of the liver cells (Kariuki, George, 2010). The skin experiences problems as the skin vessels widen and the flow of blood become more intensive and weight is seriously affected. It restricts drug addicts from taking healthy meal on regular basis.
This creates a primary reason why alcohol addicts can experience heart failure. Alcohol also causes mental problems. The brain is damaged, memory loss, anxiety and blackouts. Long term use of alcohol results to brain problems and serious mental problems. The central nervous system is also affected. It becomes hard to talk thus leading to slurred speech.
Damage to central nervous system also results to numbness, pain, weakness in movements and paralysis of the eye muscles (Herrington, Roland , George R. Jacobson, and David G. Benzer, 1987). Alcohol is one of the leading causes of road accidents. It is clear that alcohol is a depressant substance as it slows down the normal functions of the nervous system.
Abuse and heavy use of alcohol has led to deaths and disabilities to most of the people worldwide. This occurs as a result of impaired vision,
reduced vigilance and concentration, feeling drowsy and more relaxed which may cause a driver to fall asleep. It also becomes difficult to multitask and obeying road rules as well as overconfidence. Alcohol also reduces the ability to see objects from a distance; there is double vision where things appear blurred. It also reduces the ability to perceive what is happening around. All the above factors considered while driving, can cause a fatal accident.
Research shows that in every increase in blood alcohol concentration, the risk to be involved in an accident doubles (Lerner, Barron, 2011). In conclusion, it is clear that alcohol beverages are used for mood changing whereby the feeling of euphoria and talkativeness is improved. However, alcohol has been proved as one of the leading causes of road accidents recently. Abuse and heavy use of alcohol has led to deaths and disabilities to most of the people worldwide the more one consumes, the more the parts of the brain become numbed. In the brain, alcohol acts as an anesthetic and moves very fast in various parts of the body. Once someone is drunk, the frontal lobe is affected which leads to switching off.
It is also clear that alcohol is one of the leading factors in road accidents. When drunk, the ability to focus is slowed and thus becoming very dangerous when driving. Driving under alcohol influence leads to car accidents every day. This finding therefore shows that no guarantee that any amount of alcohol is safe for human beings.
Any individual who engages to drug abuse is putting his health at risk of problems.
