Us Military Service Against Human Discrimination Essay Example
The policy of the US military service prohibits discrimination that is based on sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation.
The law bans discrimination based on sexual orientation, encompassing being gay, lesbian, heterosexual, or bisexual. This protection extends to individuals who have friends who are gay or lesbians, visit gay clubs, or are perceived as being gay, lesbian, or heterosexual even if they are not themselves. Consequently, people with these sexual orientations face no discrimination in military service. Moreover, the military includes diverse ethnic and racial groups within these sexual categories, sparking inquiries about racial integration in the military. Henceforth, there exist similarities and disparities between sexual and racial orientation regarding military service.
Both sexual and racial orientations determine minority group status in American culture and face prejudice and differential treatment from the majority. Despite efforts to
...combat racism, African Americans, native Indians, and other minority races still experience different treatment based on their sexual orientation compared to white individuals. The introduction of new military personnel policies addressing race and sexual orientation has faced opposition from those who historically supported segregation policies, including white individuals in the armed forces. However, there are also distinctions between sexual and racial orientations. Race is often visible while sexual orientation can be concealed. Additionally, race strongly correlates with socioeconomic status in the United States whereas the influence of sexual orientation on socioeconomic standing is less pronounced.
While there are notable differences between the two groups in terms of the ratio of racial minority military personnel and openly gay individuals, it is anticipated that the number of openly gay individuals in the military will continue to be comparatively limited.
