Hair despises his dad because he missed out on a lot of things that a father should teach his son but he was too drunk most of the time to teach him. Man vs.. Nature: Hair has a lot of struggle with nature as a source of food and income. He rarely catches any fish due to having no boat to go out to sea and catch with, and he only has a net that he can no nearly nothing with.

The crops that he grows aren't very satisfying either and are hard to grow and take care of. Characterization: Hart: Hair is a very mature character considering he is only 12. He has this large responsibility that has been forced on him by his father who disregarded his family and cared more about drinking. To Hair Bombay is an illusion because for all he knows, he'll never be able to make it a reality. He thinks that if he goes there he will freedom and excitement. He wants to be

rich like a lot of his idols and he wants to be a big success and be able to afford gold and silver and a large amount of food like there in his village can.

Hair leads a hard life, as he has to make all the decisions that should be taken care by adults, his father in particular. Hair's Dad: Hair's dad is known mostly as a drunkard. He has a very little amount of respect for his fatherly duties and his family, and wastes all of his money and time on drinking and buying toddy. He doesn't care about his wife and kids at all until the last part of the book. He used to be a fisherman and he has a lost a lot of Job opportunities due to him being constantly drunk. Hair's dad turns over a new leaf and stops drinking as much and egging to take care of his wife who is very sick and his daughters.

Lila: Lila is the equivalent to the mother of the house. She is only 13 and quit school when she was 12 because her mother fell ill and needed constant care. She cooks and clearness and does all the Jobs a mother would do including shopping and helping out her younger siblings who are still in school. She does as much as she can for her family and jumps at any opportunity to earn money for her family. She is very caring and always does the best she can do. Hair is a strong believer, it gave him

strength to carry on and to take care of his family Coconut day - traditional holiday, Coconut day, it was an eye opener to Hart. It showed how strong he was and how he overcame the horrible weather and the people for nine months. Industrialization - shows how change isn't that bad and that everyone has to change at one point. Hair being at two different cities and different cultures showed him that change isn't that bad and that change can make their lives better. Paragraph 3 - Characterization Hair is the oldest and is the father role for his younger sisters and sometimes his older sister. He is very resilient and is the main character. Hair's mother is sick and ill, from what is told she loves her children. Lila is the oldest of the siblings but looks up to Hair and takes orders from him. She is very caring and cooks and clearness. She is the help Lila and Hair with anything they need and are the only siblings who still go to school (very common in Indian culture).

Hair's father is mainly known as a drunk to his family. He does nothing in regards to helping out the family and was the reason why the father role was forced onto Hart. Turns over a new leaf at the end of the book and stops drinking.
