"The Second Amendment, included in the US constitution in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, protects individuals' rights to own and carry firearms. However, this has led to a controversial issue regarding public safety. According to Jehan et al. (2018), the United States has the highest global rate of firearm-related violence. Consequently, crimes involving guns are a significant political concern, leading to ongoing debates on whether stricter gun control measures should be implemented to protect citizens" (Lopez, G.).
The issue of gun violence in our society is complex and deeply rooted. To protect our families and communities, it is crucial to address this problem from a public health perspective. The main goal of a study is to understand the factors behind gun-related violence in the United States. However, addressing these issues requires conducting empirical research. By investigating the causes of gun-rel
...ated violence, we can identify contributing factors, determine those responsible for committing such acts, and develop strategies to reduce their occurrence.
A comprehensive analysis and investigation are essential when assessing the impact of guns on violence in the United States (Wellford, C.F., Pepper, J. V.,& Petrie, C.V.(Eds.). The primary objective of this proposal is to raise awareness among citizens about the prevalence of gun-related crimes and the urgent need for their reduction. This research proposal aims to address various key questions: the number of guns in circulation, how these firearms end up in criminals' hands, criteria for disqualifying individuals from owning guns, reasons behind gun ownership, potential correlation between high rates of gun ownership and levels of crime, distribution methods employed by manufacturers to supply guns to consumers, motives behind advocates who support stricte
gun control measures using terms like "gun murder," "gun crime," or "gun death," and determining the percentage of responsible gun owners involved in gun-related crimes. Completing this research proposal can potentially benefit citizens of the United States as it may help reduce rates of gun violence.
The gun suicide rate in the United States is significantly higher than in other high-income countries, with a rate eight times greater. Similarly, the gun homicide rate in the U.S is 25 times higher compared to these countries. Furthermore, women in America face a much higher risk of being killed with a gun, as they are 16 times more likely to experience this compared to their counterparts in other high-income nations ('Gun Violence in America' 2018). It is imperative that we strive towards reducing these statistics. This proposal presents a potential solution for achieving this goal by implementing the measures outlined in this document. These measures aim to decrease the rate of gun crime, reduce firearm possession, and establish stricter regulations for obtaining guns. Ultimately, regardless of whether it yields positive or negative outcomes, adopting these measures would ensure the safety of individuals residing in the United States.
The objective of the study is to analyze the factors that lead to increased levels of gun-related violence in urban areas in the western and southern regions of the United States, as compared to other areas. Gun-related violence refers to criminal activities involving firearms, while crime encompasses any illegal actions resulting in legal consequences. A gun is a specialized weapon used for shooting bullets or projectiles.
The definition of policymakers is someone who creates and plans, particularly those implemented by a business or government.
Harsh refers to something unpleasantly rough or jarring to the senses. Restrictive means imposing restrictions or limitations on someone's activities or freedom. Urban areas, according to population censuses, are city areas considered as the inner city plus built-up environs, regardless of local body administrative boundaries. Populations are the number or body of inhabitants in a place belonging to a specific sociocultural, socioeconomic, ethnic, or racial subgroup.
An interview is a meeting or conversation where questions are asked to gather information for a newspaper story, television broadcast, etc.
The survey method involves inspecting or appraising something in order to determine its value or condition.
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution was added in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, granting individuals the rights to own and carry firearms. Since then, gun ownership has been debated due to concerns about public safety. Efforts by officials to limit access to guns have been criticized for violating the rights protected by the Second Amendment (Jehan, et al.).
According to 'Gun Violence in America' (2018), the consequences of gun violence extend beyond casualties. In 2015, there were a total of 13,286 deaths and 26,819 injuries related to firearms in the United States documented by the Gun Violence Chronicle. These numbers are projected to rise as incidents from the final week of that year are accounted for. Moreover, the Mass Shooting Tracker recorded 372 mass shootings in 2015, leading to 475 fatalities and injuring 1,870 people.
According to a reliable source, a mass shooting is defined as an incident where four or more individuals, including the aggressor, are killed or injured. In 2015, a campaign group formed after the tragic Sandy Hook
elementary school massacre in Connecticut in 2012 reported a total of 64 incidents of shootings in schools. These figures also include cases where firearms were discharged but did not result in injuries ('Guns in the US: The statistics behind the violence' 2016). The current body of research on gun-related violence strongly suggests that easy access to guns contributes to an increase in violent crimes worldwide.
Implementing strict access to firearms is an effective strategy in reducing violent crimes and lowering suicide rates. The ease of obtaining guns increases the risk of unauthorized individuals using them. Countries with stringent gun control laws generally have lower homicide rates compared to those without such regulations. Additionally, having guns in households raises the likelihood of violent deaths, especially during domestic disputes. It is worth noting that approximately 35% of men and 12% of women in the United States currently own firearms. Nevertheless, supporters advocating for the right to bear arms argue that citizens should be permitted to possess guns for self-defense.
The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution asserts the importance of a well-regulated militia for ensuring the security of a free state and protects the right of individuals to possess and carry firearms. However, imposing restrictions on legal gun access can have unintended consequences, such as the creation of an illegal weapons market similar to illicit drugs, which in turn fuels organized crime.
Despite implementing stricter laws on gun control, criminals still manage to obtain and use firearms for committing violent acts. The National Rifle Association (NRA) argues that limiting access to guns does not improve societal safety. Opponents of gun control laws believe that denying civilians from purchasing firearms gives
excessive power to the government and increases the likelihood of oppressive governance.
In conclusion, future research should focus on preventing gun-related violence throughout an individual's life span. This includes early childhood programs aimed at promoting emotional well-being and interventions for troubled individuals who pose a violent threat ('Gun Control Advantages and Disadvantages' 2015).
It is crucial to recognize that the majority of individuals with mental illness are not a danger. However, it is important for those who have a risk of violence due to their mental illness, suicidal thoughts, or feelings of despair to receive mental health treatment in order to prevent incidents involving weapons. It is essential to prioritize national policies and programs that identify and provide treatment for all people with mental illness. Swift action must be taken as the use of weapons greatly increases the chances of fatal acts of violence. The successful implementation of gun bans for high-risk groups such as domestic violence offenders, individuals with violent misdemeanor convictions, and mentally ill individuals deemed dangerous has been proven in reducing violence. In addition, requiring licenses for handgun buyers, conducting background checks for all gun sales, and closely monitoring gun retailers can effectively help prevent firearms from falling into the hands of criminals.
Efforts are needed to tackle gun violence by implementing interventions in legal, public health, public safety, community, and health systems. To effectively evaluate policies aimed at reducing gun violence, it is crucial to enhance data availability and funding (source: 'Gun Control Advantages and Disadvantages' 2015). This research specifically targets urban populations in the United States who encounter the most severe levels of gun-related violence. The study participants comprise individuals living in areas
with a high incidence of gun-related violence, encompassing both offenders convicted for such acts and victims.
The chosen population consists of individuals with firsthand experience of gun violence. These people have personally witnessed the impact of gun-related violence on their lives and surroundings. To collect data for the research proposal, I would employ both the Survey Method and Qualitative Interviews. This entails gathering information from convicted individuals responsible for gun-related violence as well as those affected by it. The study participants primarily reside in urban areas and have either committed gun-related offenses or experienced the consequences of such violence. This approach is crucial because not everyone feels at ease discussing these sensitive issues in person.
Qualitative interviews are commonly preferred for gathering information from individuals charged with gun-related violence. Many people find face-to-face discussions more comfortable in these cases. The aim is to understand how they acquired the weapon and their characteristics. The collected data will be organized to identify differences and patterns in urban areas with criminal activity. Ensuring the reliability and validity of measurement methods and tools used is crucial. As a result, a data analysis framework is employed for statistical calculations and further examination.
Using qualitative measurement information for surveys and interviews allows us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental characteristics of crime in urban areas. This approach necessitates active involvement in collecting and analyzing data. Through the utilization of research data, we can generate a map that identifies the majority of participants based on factors such as age, sex, and location. The age range considered for this study is individuals aged 19 years and older. The analysis method I plan to employ
involves examining unstructured data that I have collected, which serves specific purposes. The aim and rationale behind this research endeavor are to ascertain the underlying causes of gun-related violence in the United States.
This proposal examines the present circumstances and assesses the impact of a novel program, with particular emphasis on more stringent firearm regulations.
