Broadway is known as the “Great White Way” because it was one of the first streets in New York to be lit up by electric lights.
Prohibition helped establish organized crime by creating a desire for alcohol. Since alcohol was banned by Prohibition, places called speakeasys were set up, where people could come and drink without the law knowing. In actuality, many law enforcement agents were part of this set up. “Runners” became quite common as well, producing and distributing alcohol under the nose of the law that wasn’t participating, the most common example being the classic “Moonshiners” that have been popularized in modern television and cinema. Todays example of this would be the national ban of marijuana. Marijuana was used as a medicinal agent before the ban, with many people using it to alleviate pain
.... The Government under the Reagan Administration used the criminalization of marijuana as a means to legally target minority groups that they believed caused problems. Now, the laws are becoming laxer in regard to the use of marijuana, using science to disprove the studies that were used to criminalize it in the first place.
The culture of the 1920’s shifted the boundaries of American Society as many Americans began to own cars, radios, and telephones. For women, their efforts in the war led to a higher level of respect in society. According to the BBC, working women increased in number by as much as 25%, women gained the right to vote, social standards were more accepting to women with Flappers beginning to smoke in public and dancing to new dances. Women had become more sexually liberated as well, no longer being see
as a pure and delicate flower that must be confined at all times. Media in the 1920’s effected the consumer culture of America through radio, news, and magazines. Radio allowed for the quick exchange of information and advertisements to the masses. News and magazines became more popular and increased the spread of literature and information throughout the populous as well. Modern Media still supports and promotes consumerism, companies use advertisement to establish an emotional connection between the product and the consumer. Consumerism is still alive and well in America.
The Harlem Renaissance showed the American populous the plight and struggles of African Americans, detailing the emotion and story of a minority group of the time. Poems and stories written by African American authors and poets showed the world the life of an African American, as both an individual and a group. Musicians used Jazz Music to turn their emotions and moods into art, gripping the country and instilling them with emotion. The Harlem Renaissance also instilled a sense of Self-Confidence and Political Activism, leading to the rise of the Civil Rights Movement later on in the 20th Century.
Urbanization is the process of moving away from the countryside into a more urban, city environment for work or quality of life. It changed the country by having an increase in population within the urban environment, leading to a mass consumption of food and knowledge like art, literature, and leisure time. With a more consolidated population, hazards such as accidents and crime also followed, but the benefits also increased as well. Since everything was already so consolidated, stores, services, and support were all closer to the home, rather than
being spaced out like in the countryside. Government rule also increased since the population became more congested, with more laws and regulations being implemented .
