What is Third Person Point Of View?

Third Person Point of View is a narrative technique employed in writing whereby the storyteller or narrator uses pronouns such as he, she, or they to refer to characters rather than using the first person point of view. Third Person Point of View can be either limited or omniscient. Limited third person point of view gives the reader an insight into only one character’s thoughts and feelings, while omniscient third person point of view allows the reader access to all characters’ thoughts and feelings.Using Third Person Point of View has its advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include being able to create a more objective narrative by removing any personal biases from the story, creating suspense by withholding information from readers, and allowing for greater perspective on events as readers have access to multiple characters’ perspectives instead of just one. Disadvantages can include difficulty in maintaining consistency between each character’s voice, loss of intimacy between reader and character due to distance imposed by third person point-of-view, and potential confusion when too many characters are included in a single scene.
