What is Sexually Transmitted Infection?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are spread through sexual contact. They can be passed from person to person through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. STIs can have serious health consequences, including infertility and even death in some cases.STIs are caused by bacteria and viruses, but they can also be caused by fungi and parasites. The most common types of STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and HIV/AIDS.It is important to get tested for STIs if you are having unprotected sex or if your sexual partner has a history of STI infection. Prompt diagnosis and treatment will help reduce the risk of transmission to your partner(s). Even if you aren’t having any symptoms of an STI it is still important to get tested regularly as some infections may not cause any symptoms at all. If you do test positive for any type of STI it is important to inform your current or past partners so that they can also be tested and treated appropriately if needed. It is also important to practice safer sex such as using condoms when engaging in sexual contact with another person in order to reduce the risk of transmission. It’s critical that we all become more aware about the different types of sexually transmitted infections so that we can protect ourselves and our partners from them by practicing safe sex habits such as using condoms whenever engaging in sexual activities with another person.
