What is Project Management Institute?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) is a professional organization for project managers and practitioners, founded in 1969. It is dedicated to advancing the state of the art in project management methodology and best practices through education, certification, standards-setting, networking, research, advocacy and other activities. PMI’s membership includes more than 500,000 members worldwide from over 200 countries. PMI also serves as the global accreditation body for organizations offering certified training programs related to project management. PMI offers certifications that are widely recognized by employers around the world such as Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), Project Management Professional (PMP)®, Program Management Professional (PgMP®), Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP®). These certifications demonstrate an individual’s knowledge of foundational concepts necessary to successfully manage projects. The PMP certification requires extensive experience working with projects and passing a rigorous exam demonstrating capabilities in areas such as scope management, risk management and quality assurance. In addition to its certifications program, PMI provides educational materials and resources on topics such as agile software development methods; organizational change; earned value analysis; portfolio management; stakeholder engagement; scheduling tools & techniques; cost estimating & control models; sustainability strategies for projects & portfolios; resource planning & optimization methods. There are many courses available online or in person at local chapters which offer more detailed information on specific topics related to managing successful projects including leadership skills for project managers and how to handle conflicts among team members when working on complex initiatives.
