What is Problem Based Learning?
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional method that encourages students to learn by engaging in the process of finding solutions to real-world problems. PBL is based on the idea that learning should be student-centered and inquiry-based, rather than teacher-directed and content-based. It encourages students to think critically, develop problem solving skills, and form collaborative relationships with their peers as they work together to solve complex problems.PBL begins with a problem or challenge for students to solve. This can range from a simple math equation to a complex ethical dilemma or even a design project. Students are then asked to identify resources they need, research possible solutions, analyze the results of their efforts, draw conclusions, and present their findings in an organized manner. Through this process of investigating and exploring the problem in an independent manner, students can gain valuable knowledge and skills related to the subject matter being studied as well as develop important 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. One major benefit of PBL is that it promotes active learning among students by engaging them directly in the learning process. By giving them ownership over what they are learning and how they go about tackling challenges posed by questions or tasks given by teachers or instructors allows for more meaningful exploration of material than traditional methods like lectures or memorization techniques may provide. Additionally, PBL helps foster collaboration amongst students which further develops their communication skills and allows for deeper understanding of concepts through discussion with peers rather than simply reading textbooks alone. Furthermore, because PBL is focused on real world issues it also has great potential for developing civic mindedness among young people who engage in these types of activities regularly throughout their school years.
