What is Prince Henry Of Portugal?
Prince Henry of Portugal (1394 1460), also known as Henry the Navigator, was a Portuguese royal prince who is credited with establishing Portugal’s dominance in navigation and exploration during the 15th century. His early fascination with maritime trade drove him to explore new lands, which allowed for unprecedented growth in European technology and knowledge. He established a school for navigators near his palace at Sagres, where he trained men to become seasoned navigators and pioneers of international commerce. Prince Henry is remembered primarily for his efforts that led to the Age of Discovery, which saw Portugal expand its influence around the world through trading posts in Africa, India, Brazil and beyond. To aid this expansion he employed innovative techniques such as building caravels ships designed specifically for long-distance voyages and sponsoring cartographers like Martin Behaim who created some of the earliest maps of Europe. He also funded expeditions south along Africa’s coast seeking sources of gold and spices while encouraging his captains to search out islands on their return trips home. By 1488 Bartolomeu Dias had rounded South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope while Christopher Columbus discovered America five years later thanks in part to Prince Henry’s work.Prince Henry’s legacy can still be felt today through advances made possible by his initiatives like improvements in seafaring technology such as better sails or increased access to exotic products due to global exploration routes that enabled merchants more efficiently connect buyers with sellers across continents than ever before. Furthermore, his legacy has played an integral role in shaping modern geopolitics between East Asia and Europe, linking cultures together via mutually beneficial trade agreements fostered over centuries ago because of his leadership as one of the most influential figures behind the Age Of Discovery.
