What is Positive Self Esteem?
Positive self esteem is an important part of a healthy and successful life. It is the foundation of how we perceive ourselves and the value we give to our lives. It is closely linked to our mental health, self-confidence and the way we handle life’s challenges. Possessing good self esteem can lead to greater happiness, better relationships, improved career success and a higher quality of life.Having positive self esteem means that you have an internal belief in yourself, your abilities and your worth. It means that you are able to take on challenges without fear, accept criticism constructively, forgive yourself for mistakes or failures, set goals with confidence and celebrate successes without feeling guilty or undeserving. With positive self esteem comes a sense of resilience; when faced with difficult situations or problems you will have the ability to draw from inner strength rather than external help or approval from others. Developing positive self-esteem involves knowing your strengths as well as accepting your limitations understanding who you are as a person and being comfortable in acknowledging it both inwardly and outwardly. This can be done through activities such as journaling, mindfulness meditation, affirmations or visualisation exercises which focus on building up areas of low confidence whilst also recognising moments of achievement. Encouraging yourself with loving words rather than negative thoughts can also help build positive feelings towards yourself; talk positively about yourself out loud such as I am capable I am strong I am intelligent etc Adopting this kinder inner dialogue helps to replace any negative thoughts with more realistic but encouraging ones which ultimately result in feeling better about oneself overall. By making small changes towards developing positive self-esteem each day, eventually this new way of thinking will become second nature allowing for greater success in all areas of our lives.
