What is Notre Dame Cathedral?
Notre Dame Cathedral is an iconic landmark in Paris, France. It is a grand and beautiful Gothic cathedral that stands on the ÃŽle de la Cité in the middle of the River Seine. Built over 800 years ago, Notre Dame has been a symbol of French culture, history and faith for many generations. The first stone of Notre Dame was laid by Pope Alexander III in 1163, but it would take almost 200 years to complete its construction. The cathedral’s interiors are as impressive as its exterior with intricate stained-glass windows and gargoyles adorning its walls and ceilings. Inside lies one of the most famous sculptures in Europe – the Pieta sculpture by Michelangelo – which depicts Mary cradling Jesus after his crucifixion. Notre Dame has been a popular tourist attraction since it opened its doors to visitors in 1793 during the French Revolution. Visitors can explore both inside and outside the building, including climbing up to the towers where they can see stunning views of Paris from above. There are also guided tours through different parts of the cathedral such as crypts, chapels and even onto its roof where visitors can witness close-up some of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. In April 2019 Notre Dame suffered a devastating fire due to an electrical fault that destroyed much of its spire and roof structure – bringing shock waves around both France and world at large. However despite this tragedy, restoration work is already underway with plans to refurbish this beloved monument back to its former glory for future generations to enjoy for centuries more.
